History surely matters here, but which history?

The history that these teams have had in the playoffs, makes this a tough game to cap. The Spurs have a remarkable record/history in game 5s (about a 75% win rate) and the Clippers are (over their short history) known chokers. They never fail to let us down in the big moments (as we saw in game 2). They lack that clutch gene. Luckily, this isn't game 7 we are asking them to win, it is game 5. And yet, if the Clippers lose this game the series is over. The Clippers are not winning another game in SA and the Spurs will not let them off the hook again. So, in essence, we have the desperation of a game 7 without the immediate pressure that comes with it.

Having given one away at home the Clippers will be intent to not do it again. More importantly, the Clippers, with a chance to take a commanding 3-2 lead against OKC last year, blew the game in the last minute and lost. That was a very painful loss for this team because it looked like the Clippers were finally ready to take the next step. If NBA history tells us anything, its that good teams can learn from such losses and use that experience the next time around. The game 2 loss to the Spurs must have left the team with a similar feeling (as the loss to OKC in game 5) as they failed to show up for game 3 and were humiliated. This, in turn, prompted the response in game 4. Now the Clippers are in a must win situation again, but this time they are at home, with a chance to erase the memory of last year's painful game 5 collapse. This is a huge game for the franchise. Win, and at the very worst, you guarantee a game 7 back at home. If the Clippers are to make basketball history, and win a title, it starts with winning game 5 against the champs!

The Spurs, meanwhile, have not been great on the road against good teams. They have dropped the ball, so to speak, again and again. In fact, they should have lost game 2. This is not the same team as last years and the Clippers have found ways to exploit them. Pop resorting to fouling Jordan for long stretches (in the last 3 games played in LA) should tell you that when the Clippers are playing their best, the Spurs don't have many options. And, frankly, this entire fouling Jordan business has backfired (imo) as the Spurs have hurt themselves more than they have helped themselves. They not only lose offensive flow but the psychological impact on the team (with the message being that we are not good enough to beat these guys without resorting to fouling Jordan) is also demoralizing. Even more, each stoppage slows the game down and gives the Clipper starters (who are logging heavy minutes) a chance to rest. This also diminishes the impact of SA's great advantage in this series: its bench.

Finally, this has the feel of a series that goes 7. And the only way I see that happening is by the Clippers taking game 5 and putting the champs on the brink of elimination.

    Clippers -2 for 3 units

Also closing an 8 unit tease with the Rockets at -2 (I only hope it goes better than what the Bulls did today)

If I had to bet, I'll follow you, but I think I'll pass.

The spurs rarely failed twice in a row in playoff, Pop always find adjustments. That's why he's the best. The spurs always find new solutions after a loss. Franchise name should be the San Antonio Phoenix.

i like it....i think youve got a winner here.in this spot if the clippers come with full focus and bring close to their best they will definitely hold off the spurs, tho san antonio will clearly present a huge challenge and much improved poise and consistency from last time out.....but as you state, home team knows there is little margin for error here.they will be in must win mode...spurs have the experience and pedigree to know they are never out of it and can still win going forwards and in a game 7 if needs be....not to say they wont be going all out,of course they will...but wen push comes to shove i think clippers desire mite just carry them thru in possibly a very tight affair.

I dont like the Let down spot for the Clippers and the come up spot for the Spurs in this game. Can make a case for both teams.

One things for sure though..... Austin Rivers won't save the Clippers this game. Duncan even said they never even game planned for him. That'll make things interesting. This will be a grueling game. Should come down clipps having the mental toughness to execute all game.

Like it BB. I have been calling for DOC to run on the spurs all series. Sometimes it is that simple, "less is more". Use youth, athleticism and motivation. I don't think the spurs have any strategy that could combat that. Ofcoarse I was on the clippers in game 3 thinking he would "run" on the spurs and he didn't.(it was the prime opportunity to do so after those OT's IMO) So a lot lays on Doc Rivers shoulders, but fortunately the clip won't have to look far for motivation being at home.

Might tail you here and some LOB CITY.

I like your insights BB, I find your thoughts very helpful when I make picks. About this game I want to say for all 4 games Spurs never played well actually, they were sloppy with the ball, not shooting 3 well, don't play good defense on DJ and Blake and still they win two games. Somehow, they allow Austin Rivers to do whatever he wants in G4 (will not happen again). All of spurs 3-point shooters didn't said their words so far. Spurs need to be Spurs in game 5, that would be enough. I think they will adjust to LAC, and win G5

Well, I really believe in Spurs here.
After first game, Spurs were "too old" to match the Clippers.
After 3 lose, Clippers were just a terrible team and keep on singing.

Spurs didn't lose anything. The biggest problem for the Clips is to meet the expectations.
Riveres the son made a great work not being under pressure. I can't find him make it once again today's game or even close.
Clippers's bench is just a **** in my opinion and even though they made a good preformance last time, they'll disapear once again.

You can't avoid Spur's experiance and you can't avoid  the fact that the Clippers just remember game to and Thunder lost series.
I belive Spurs will manage the game way better on offense in order to pull that fouls from key players and paralyze them and not letting them hurt them once again, and from the other side, I believe we see even thougher defense from Spurs and double teams on CP and Griffin to make them lose the ball more than few times in a game and disturbing their execution game plan.

I believe in Spurs  because of that facts, when crunch time is near, all you have is that memories (which is bad for Clippers players and fans) that hurt them.

Anyway, I won't place any bet, I'll just sit relaxed and have fun of fantastic competition.

Why put 3 units if it's a tough game to cap ?
I understant people want to be part of it by betting but why so much ?

Wow, Kennedy? He is no good for soup:

Typically, the NBA's officiating assignments draw a reaction from fans, mostly that they're team is getting jobbed because they believe a particular referee has a vendetta. Typically, it's simply fans being fans. But for tonight's Game 3, Celtics fans might have reason to gripe.

Working tonight's pivotal Game 3 against the Miami Heat at the Garden will be a veteran crew of Steve Javie, Bob Delaney and noted Doc Rivers' nemesis Bill Kennedy. Rivers and Kennedy have had an acrimonious relationship for years. Both were fined following a game on March 17, 2009. Kennedy ejected Rivers after they stared each other down for an extended period of time.

Rivers was fined $25,000 by the NBA for his critical comments of Kennedy after the game. In an unusual move, Kennedy was fined for his handling of the situation and the news was made public, though the amount was undisclosed.

“[Kennedy] stood there and goaded me and goaded me and goaded me and stared at me,” Rivers said after the game. “Look at the film. I actually walked away. He asked me, ‘Where do you want the ball?’ And I said, ‘Ask them,’ talking about our players. That’s my right to say that, and I walked away. He stood there and stared me down and stared me down and goaded me until I turned around and said, ‘What?’ That’s when I got thrown out of the game.”

Disgraced referee Tim Donaghy, obviously not the most credible source, claimed to know the root of the ill will during an interview with the "Celtics Late Night Show" podcast last March. According to Donaghy, the beef has deep roots, with Rivers questioning Kennedy's sexuality during a game.

Thanks for taking time for these thoughts. But I have to disagree. Teams that falter in past tend to be teams that falter in the future. With that said.....this game has very little to do with the previous falters or success of either team. Anytime I try to dictate a winner based on these theories I end up getting crushed. In reality the winner will be dictated on whether spurs execute and hit shots vs clips dictating pace and making the spurs uncomfortable. This is a must win for the clips but in essence game 4 was as well.....back to back must wins are never easy in nab playoffs. This is a very interesting matchup and should be a great game. The line is correct. Flip a coin and hope you end up on the right side.....

    Bb,

    Excellent write up as usual.

Here is the main issue in this game for me:

Who propelled the team to victory last game outside of the almost always dependable Paul? (And some of this has been said above)

    Austin Rivers

7-8 for 16 Pts. That is the game of his life in that spot and he was the difference.

Not one but two Spurs starters scored 0 PTs (Splitter and Green; yes one was hampered by injury, but still). I'll bet you that hasn't happened since the 90's and maybe you'd have to go back further.

    The Clippers won by 9.

Both of the above will NOT happen again which makes the point differential very, very close here as the usuals will come to play.

The end result is a toss up for me. I love the history you quoted. I just wish the clips were up 2-1 and lost game 4 instead of having to have Pop and Co. drop two in a row. It's very hard for me to fade him twice in a row.

Very tough game here but your cap is sound.

I'll think about it some more with the points you presented.

Ages for top 8 players in each team's rotation

    29 Chris Paul
    30 J.J. Redick
    26 Blake Griffin
    35 Matt Barnes
    26 DeAndre Jordan
    35 Jamal Crawford
    29 Glen Davis
    22 Austin Rivers
    232 total

    32 Tony Parker
    27 Danny Green
    23 Kawhi Leonard
    39 Tim Duncan
    30 Tiago Splitter
    33 Boris Diaw
    37 Manu Ginobili
    26 Patrick Mills
    247 total

Playing every other day, and traveling after each of the remaining games will be a little tougher on the Spurs, I think.

Clips are +115 to win the series, looks like a good play to me

Clips top 4 playing heavy heavy minutes....that nullifies age diff imo. Unless spurs nagging injuries catches up to them, and it very well may.

I do agree with the historical perspective aligned with the Thunder series last year and the clips falterings there. I'm just not completely convinced the Clips think this is over if they lose this game.

We know they thought a 3-1 deficit would end the series, but because they hold home court and can have a game 7 at home, that 'Clips game 7 intensity' you speak of may have all been used up last game, only to be replenished for the zig-zag game 6 win.

There are so many unknown variables that can turn this game to either team. Manu not showing up. Parker re-aggrevating an injury. Duncan finally playing like he's worn out. Hack a DeAndre working/not working. Clippers bench stepping up (the little that's there). This is gonna be nip and tuck the whole way I think and Pop will play an aggressive chess match to get his team in a spot to win one of 2 for it all like he did with the Heat two years ago, only to have an Allen miracle 3 sink them.

A very uncomfortable game for me. I'd like to go clips but I just don't think I can hit the submit button.

Biscuit, good info. Barkley said the same thing on TNT, about age, travel and games on short rest.

Scal, I don't blame you. And the refs...my god. Who knows what they have up their sleeves. But, I think if the NBA had its druthers, the Clippers would advance. Clippers/Warriors WCF would be a big hit, and a lot of fun to watch (especially for people who don't know crap about basketball).
