I have just read 1 of the dumbest articles about instant replay in MLB...

Guys i never cease to be amazed by the stupidity of the BBWAA cult as well as the bloggers. There's a writer named Craig Calcaterra he writes for hardballtalk which is like profootballtalk that's owned by NBC. Here is what Mr.Sabermetric geek i mean Mr.Calcaterra wrote:

The problem is the time it takes.

In an era where MLB is trying to speed the game along.

Umpires need an ear piece that is dialed into the NY studio. One replay ump for 3 games. Ideally 1 or 2 games at a time and the other 1 or 2 games at the later time.
It's not hard to have the umps stay in their position and wait for the call from the studio. The home plate umps presses the magic button and the replay crew is already on top of the call. They make the call to the ear piece and it's done. It will take 1 minute to get done at max.

Replay does work.

If they want to speed up the game they need to get hitters in the box like the rules say. If you add up certain players times everythime they step out of the box during a game you'll find they take more time then replay.

Catcher should only be able to visit the pitcher once per inning. If that''s all the coaches get that's all the catchers should get.

Replay does work, umps are not perfect but the camera catches 98% of every play.

BG90 - I agree with much of what you say and would add that the speed of the game is slowed by TV commercials, which seem to grow by about 30 seconds per year. Players no longer have to hustle on and off the field because the TV commercials allow plenty of time.

As for instant replay I can live with it, but what drives me nuts is New York looking at every possible angle a dozen times over three or four minutes. That is BS. If there is no obvious error seen in one minute the call should stand. The object of instant replay is not to search, search, search for a way to overturn. The umpire had about a tenth of a second to make the call. One minute is 3600 times that. If it isn't apparent, affirm the call and stop searching.

KEY- I think you're right about the commercials. I didn't even think about that time.

If the home announcers are able to view the instant replay before the umps have time to check in with NY there are changes that can be made to speed the game up (the home viewers and home announcers usually have the call made before the umps call into NY). Maybe they need to have an instant reply room in every ball park. One vet ump and one rookie ump under training (or a rookie ump and a replay specialist). The rookie ump can spend a year in the replay before he hits the field. or act as a back up in case a field ump has to leave the game.

Replay is intended to get the call right. You can have replay with out effecting the game as long as the system is dialed in and the small details are worked out.

I am not for the pitch tracker however. Some players are 5'6 and some players are 6'5. Balls curve and the play isn't a square. A big curve ball might not catch the plate since the back half is angled. They need to can that pitch tracker all together.
