"when we look at modern man we have to face the fact that modern man suffers from a kind of poverty of the spirit, which stands in glaring contrast to his scientific and technological abundance, we've learned to fly the air like birds, we've learned to swim the seas like fish, and yet we havent learned to walk the earth as brothers and sisters."

    christians + atheists...

ghostwriters are used to write books, articles e.c.t that are officially credited to another person. the notion that celebrities + political leaders use ghostwriters to draft or edit autobiographies magazine articles and speeches is excepted by its audience, on the substantial amount of research by the silent author. while the lead article of the thread is well constructed, it has pattern errors in its information that illustrate the writer had a motive. this isnt critera to the apostles being fraudulent.

to the christian, make an effort to apply the standards of positive communication, in that your response to an athiest's challenge will cause them to rethink their position.

so, speak the atheist language, the language of evidence + reasoning, of logic and proof, using a comprehensive worldview system that will describe the nature of all reality about any field that claims to be knowledge rather than just speculation or ego assertion.

rhetoric narrow thinking in arrangment, style + delivery just scores the highest negative of attitudes from a group that already harbors bigotry towards creation doctrine.

think how jesus would approach + conduct himself in the conversation. he doesnt need lawyers to defend the faith, he requires fisherman, right?

to the atheist, dont be supercilious with the thought of superior insight that has you seeing errors that invalidate the argument that are not illusions. saying such dirt that if God existed that he would not design a world that contains natural evil. that accordingly, hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes, + tsunamis represent the workings of an indifferent, indiscriminately cruel world.

dont fail to realize fact like that all the bad things of this world are absolutely required for life to exist at all. most of this evil provides us with much more pleasure than pain.

the existence of earthquakes is that the earth's continental crusts are floating on the earth's molten mantel. since the continents are floating, the plates that make up the continents tend to run into one another. when they slip past one another, the grinding of the plates results in the release of a large amount of energy, causing the plates to shake.

if humans could just eliminate the mantel and make all the continents fixed in position, on the surface, it sounds like a good idea, but all other rocky planets in the solar system have no molten core, and, therefore, no seismic activity. a molten interior of the earth is absolutely essential to the existence of life. the independent rotation of the molten interior of the earth results in a magnetic dynamo that produces a charged field around the earth.

this magnetic field produces the van-allen radiation shield, which protects the earth from radiation bombardment. if this shield were not present, life would not be possible on the earth.

I hate to break it to the Christians out there, but if they actually read the Bible, particularly what Jesus said and how he lived - he would be appalled by todays capitalist kill or be killed society.  A luxury item like a computer would cause him to tell you that you should sell it and get back to doing something important, like helping the poor and disadvantaged.

The fact that "christians" have enough time to waste on a gambling website is so hypocritical I dont even know where to start.  Jesus would condemn this monumental waste of time, along with all of your material possessions and lack of helping your fellow man.

The real problem with christianity is that christ has been taken out of it by the church.  It should just be called "ianity", there is no christ in todays christians.  Jesus would be sick about you with your car, your house, your food - while half of the world is homeless and hungry - and you do nothing about it except pray to him that you will be able to buy a nicer car or have better food.  What do you think Jesus would say about that?   Christians in this country have a crisis when they cant pay their mortgage, or cant buy organic produce - what do you think a benevolent god thinks of your incredible selfishness when you pray for YOUR life to get better?  Dont you think Jesus would tell you to sell all of your stuff and start hitting the streets to make a difference?

So I dont take these fake christians too seriously.  They have lost the message.  In fact, I find that non-believers are closer to Jesus and the way he lived than most christians - they have been hijacked to believe that Jesus is in favor of materialism and survival of the fittest.  Jesus was not a survival of the fittest type of guy.  Jesus was a survival of the masses type of guy.

That is the problem and I agree with you. However you clearly have not met good born again Christians and that is the problem. Your basing all your thoughts on the main majority and they have massive issues.

Your basing all your thoughts on the main majority and they have massive issues.

dont fail to realize fact like that all the bad things of this world are absolutely required for life to exist at all. most of this evil provides us with much more pleasure than pain.

the existence of earthquakes is that the earth's continental crusts are floating on the earth's molten mantel. since the continents are floating, the plates that make up the continents tend to run into one another. when they slip past one another, the grinding of the plates results in the release of a large amount of energy, causing the plates to shake.

if humans could just eliminate the mantel and make all the continents fixed in position, on the surface, it sounds like a good idea, but all other rocky planets in the solar system have no molten core, and, therefore, no seismic activity. a molten interior of the earth is absolutely essential to the existence of life. the independent rotation of the molten interior of the earth results in a magnetic dynamo that produces a charged field around the earth.

this magnetic field produces the van-allen radiation shield, which protects the earth from radiation bombardment. if this shield were not present, life would not be possible on the earth.

    Great job. Very well put!

Not once have i seen a theist START a thread mocking or laughing at atheists.

Go through all the threads, you will see atheists START ALL threads bashing mocking religion, the bible etc etc.

I am not worried, actions speak louder than words. It clearly shows the insecurities of the non believer resulting in them to continually bashing the believer.

Awesome because "I'm CDN" lol. I guess you haven't checked recently what's going on in your "smart" country.

Isn't our CDN dollar better than yours now?
    Your housing market sucks,
    people can't find jobs,
    your crime nationally is embarrassing,
your healthcare turns poor people away,
you have so much racism it is a joke,
you pass bills to randomly pull people over and check if they are "American" (Arizona),
you possibly had the stupidest all time political leader in the world (GW),
your dumbass government can't agree on one possible thing to help you out,
you start wars all over the world for no need,
your education system is an utter failure "waiting for superman"

oh yeah and if you haven't got the memo everyone in the world hates your country and people. Shit even when I went to England to see family all they thought in pubs was that i was from the States and until I clarifed it was straight attitude. Funny how CDNs are loved more than anyone around.

Listen, I love the States and have no problem with it. As you can see from my Tattoo I have your flag on my back for life. But not for the dumbass ignorant guys like you but for the guys I fought with. Please don't ever make a comment that makes the States look better than anyone because in current times your the joke of the World!!

Yes as much as I agree with you and don't see Theists starting the bashing, I also don't worry about the atheists and what they believe and the whole "monkey business."

Rostos-Just leave it at that we know what is out there and the truth and until they have felt the change of the holy spirit in their lives they will continue to not understand. No biggy and certainly doesn't warrant us to think any different of them other than they are just as human as us and were born with free will like any other human and that is "their" chosen path.

    @Rostos,

Dude isn't it the best as well when some of these guys admire some athletes their whole lives and then find our they love christ? lol just love it!!! One my best buds who is a major atheist (once in a while will mock my belief) and loves Jon Jones more than anything had a funny look on his face when Jones explained his profound love and thanks to christ once he beat up Rua. Quite the scene I must say lol.

We are not idiots for following christ as much as some will have you believe and people don't understand that it is more of a feeling and a personal relationship more than these facts and bible quotes.

Like I said System. I don't care if you mock what does it matter anyway? I'm secure with everything I believe and yes, "know" so I don't need to attack someone else or try to bring their thought process down. I find some parts funny as obviously you do with ours but that is all. I will challenge ridiculous things but that's as far as it goes. If your an atheist then great, good on ya. Have fun with that and all the best in the future.

I have a question for the athiests on here, I am an athiest myself but don't want to get caught up in this debate right now.  Just wondering if you talk in your normal life like you do on here.  Do you start religious debates with people?  I find it does no good (just like on this site) When someone mentions religion to me, I just kind of shrug it off, I have no interest in arguing.  When my 80 year old grandmother tells me she said a prayer for me, I don't tell her god doesn't exist, I say thank you.

Sadly it's all made up. All of it.

You don't need religion or God to be a good person and do good things. Just like you don't need to be an atheist to do bad and horrible things.

We all go through life with blinders over our eyes. We are destroying our planet and our future but nothing is done to seriously make a difference. Instead of searching for God we should look in the mirror and improve our lives ourselves. We have the power. Greed and delusion will be our demise.

Its 2011. The people we trust our futures with are still praying to their imaginary friends. Time to wake up. It doesn't matter if there is a God or not. Who cares. We don't need God to improve our futures.

The only appropriate attitude for man to have about the
big questions, is not the arrogant certitude that is the hallmark
of religion, but doubt. Doubt is humble and that is what man needs
to be, considering that human history is just a litany of getting
    shit dead wrong.

The plain fact is religion must die for mankind to live.

And this one is DEAD on IMO:

If you believe that the world is going to come to an end
    - and perhaps any day now - does it not drain ones motivation to
improve life on earth while were here?

    Bill Maher quotes

All I can say is I don't know what happens when you die.  But I also just can't rationally understand the God "argument" either.

My gal is a Catholic (somewhat practicing).  We've discussed this a ton and her response is, "well, your parents did you a disservice by not giving you a religious upbringing."  I'm like WTF?  If she had been brought up in India, she'd might be Hindu....or Bhuddist.  So just because you grew up Catholic is proof that it is true?

She falls on her face when we talk logic....in the end, it's all back to "just have faith."  Well, I HAVE tried and it makes me uncomfortable and I feel like a fraud.  I have, in the past, asked God to help me believe. It hasn't changed for me since I was a little kid and let me tell you, I have tried.

Like van said, we are just a blip on the radar screen on planet earth.  As Carlin said, even we can't fuk up enough to destroy the earth.  Destory human-kind, yes.  But the earth will be more then fine.

I'll have to go back and read through this thread.  Always an interesting debate on covers.

I will if others are willing.  I call myself agnostic.  Debating means learning and maybe understanding IMO.  What normally happens is the folks I talk with end up not being able to prove their point, but end up saying, "the documentation may not all be consistent...heck, even Christian religions aren't consistent, but I still believe in a higher power."

What I don't understand is how the person who murders someone can find God and end up being saved if he truly believes where I can live a good life, treat people well, contribute to the betterment of society, and not be saved because I don't know.

So the belief in Him forsakes all other actions on earth?  That is just too hard for me to get my hands around.  I mean, if God saves the soul of a murderer, what's to say this sould doesn't turn back evil in Heaven?  Is it automatically tranformed into pure good on its way up to Heaven so you don't need jails and laws up there?

I think these are serious questions and I haven't found anyone who can answer them to my satisfaction.

No doubt it is always interesting. Good people and smart cats on here. Maher is quite the man and can't get enough of Real time. Obviously don't agree with him on the religion issue but do on many political points and just love seeing him grill some of the T-baggers on the show.

Yes Christians do but not all the other religions (could be wrong). Not many Christians I know that aren't motivated. Most are very motivated to attain the best they can for their family and children much like anyone else. Good point though and certainly true in theory but not in practicality and living as a christian.

the biggest question is what do you do with jesus and the resurrection?

that is the fundamental question beneath all others.

if you look at cultural contexts
    - resurrection was LESS likely to be believed in the 1st century than today. noone would fathom making up something that no one would believe.
    - woman had no testimony, yet are the first witnesses to resurrection.  who would make that up?
    - all the disciples were complete screw ups and eventually died championing jesus.  who would make that up if trying to make the story?
    - etc etc...

there is a lot to account for if you believe the bible is fabricated (like the questions above).

either you think jesus is who he said he was or he was a liar/lunatic (cs lewis).

either way, you better do your homework on the historicity of jesus.

    other thoughts (copy and pasted):

The Bible has become a significant source book for secular archaeology.

Two of the greatest 20th-century archaeologists, William F. Albright and Nelson Glueck, both lauded the Bible (even though they were non-Christian and secular in their training and personal beliefs) as being the single most accurate source document from history. Over and over again, the Bible has been found to be accurate in its places, dates, and records of events. No other “religious” document comes even close.

The 19th-century critics used to deny the historicity of the Hittites, the Horites, the Edomites, and various other peoples, nations, and cities mentioned in the Bible. Those critics have long been silenced by the archaeologist’s spade, and few critics dare to question the geographical and ethnological reliability of the Bible.

The names of over 40 different kings of various countries mentioned in the Bible have all been found in contemporary documents and inscriptions outside of the Old Testament, and are always consistent with the times and places associated with them in the Bible. Nothing exists in ancient literature that has been even remotely as well-confirmed in accuracy as has the Bible.

    Oh please.

Maybe you are ignoring the part of the man living in the fish for 3 days or the part about the "worldwide" flood.  Or maybe the part about people living 700 years.
