Here is the book on the Obion County Fire Department. Bottom of page four reads:
rural. All fire departments in Obion County charge a $500.00 fee per call in rural areas, but collections are, less than 50% and the fire departments have no way of legally collecting the charge. Therefore, the service was provided at the expense of the municipal tax payer. So lets get this straight. 75%, ironic number isn't it, of all structure calls are from rural areas, which this house was. It would seem the majority of folks live in area outside city limits. And they are also charging a $500 fee per call to be dispatched to a location. This is very much run like a business and not a public service as most of us are used to. In my area I view Police and Fire protection as a public service funded through tax dollars.
Crazy thing about this story is these people that live in the rural areas most likely go into the city to shop, work, send kids to school, go to church, etc...and yet they get hosed, or not hosed in this case, over some service fees. The whole area seems whacked.

When an employee is hurt on the job the insurance you are referring to would be Workers Comp and yes every employee would be covered hands down. There is 100% no way, without a collective bargaining agreement, that Workers Comp can deny coverage for a working employee in his/her field. Yes, I know this for a fact. I work in an employer industry.

So these Firefighters actually were dispatched to the fire and then got there and did nothing?
If so, why did they even bother going?

Yeah, but a good lawyer could argue that the flames of a house that hasn't paid the fee are like hotter. The flames know man, the flames know
