There was a time when the blood of American soldiers was spilled for reasons that had integrity. This time is over. Now, soldiers' lives are being used as pawns in counterproductive wars that were never meant be won. Wars that have sapped the life-blood of the American economy, only to pad the pockets of executives and shareholders in the military industrial complex. The financial strain is death to America by 1000 cuts.

This is why I have compassion for the soldiers forced in to these campaigns, but not respect. Again the financial burden of these "wars" is infinitely more dangerous to America than any terrorist group or organization. How people are blind to this is unforgivable.

you make some good poitns legwand.  the soliders deserve the utmost respect.  however, what could be more disrespectful to the troops, and our country, than to keep these kids in afghanistan and iraq and other places and expose them to these risks for no good reason, if there ever was one.

legwand, it is you who respects the troops by asking these questions and the people who blindly go along with the government's decisions to fight these ridiculous wars who disrepect the troops to the greatest degree.

Everyone in America supports the troops. There may be a small majority that doesn't support the troops but they are a small majority. The rest of America most likely knows someone or is related to someone who is in the military so there is not a question that we all support our soldiers and our military. The point I am trying to make is 9/11 was going on 10 years ago. A lot of the soldiers fighting over there and who will be joining the military were little kids when it happened. Over the past 10 years saying support the troops and television shows saying that has just become the norm. Yet, noone really has any idea what we are doing there. We just accept what we are told and are just either glad we aren't there fighting or just pray that anyone who is there does not die or get injured. My point is that this war is costing us billions and billions of dollars. Our country is falling apart and I honestly believe by being there we are creating more terrorists if anything but everyday on TV it is support the troops, god bless the troops, which is great right but if that is all it is then that is not enough. I just feel like we are at war and it should be a bigger deal then just saying you support the troops but that is the extent of your interest. Blindly supporting something is not real support in my opinion.

The whole thing is that over in Afghanistan was a safe haven for these ppl to plan and train to attact the US and if we pull out then we will be back there . But this time we won't have the help of the ppl over there like we did . And all the troops know why we are in there and if you ask any of them they will say we need to stay

Being ex-navy I always find it akward when people thank me for my service, and I am not alone in this matter.  I wasn't on the front lines or on land for any of the, but was in the persian gulf when 9/11 happened, and my ship fired 6 missles into Afghanistan.  I was in charge of watching sonar, and there is zero submarine threat in the gulf (it is too shallow for subs to submerge) so I would spend 8 hours watching a screen with nothing happening, go work out, then play poker for 6 hours before going to bed.  Not exactly something people should be thanking me for.

It took us 3 years to defeat the nazis. We have been in Afghanistan for 10 years and who knows how much longer we will be there. My only question is what are we doing there.

And please tell me how we are going to make Afghanistan safe. I am dying to know the answer to that. There are places 15 minutes from my house I do not consider safe.

i think they thank you not necessarily for what you are doing but for what you have agreed to do

I think you just contradicted yourself saying there will be the "next" attack while arguing that the reason we are fighting over there is so there will not be another attack.
