I don't know, I haven't really decided. I don't really think my picks will be worth it. I know more general college football stuff than I do gambling stuff.

There are plenty of other guys on this board who are much more qualified to give out selections than I am. I may give out my top play, I'm usually really good with those but I don't know about an entire card. I'm still trying to learn how to gamble. I can remember how a game went in 1988 but I still haven't mastered gambling.

That's why there is a big difference between general sports knowledge and handicapping knowledge and I never pretend to mix the two. I wish I could tell you I hit 62 percent. I mean I could lie and tell you that but that's not my style. Like I said from the start, I'm here to learn and chip in where I think I can be helpful.

Many years ago after a terrible year of gambling I sat down and asked myself, "Why is it you know who the fullback on Eastern Michigan is, yet you can't pick a winner to save your life?" It was then a light bulb went on in my head and I knew just because you watch a lot of football and know the teams inside and out doesn't necessarily equal success at the window.

I realized that anyone can really sit there and watch a ton of games and know the sport up and down if they put in the time. My job requires it, so I do put in the time. If it were that easy, wouldn't we all be rich?

There had to be more to it that I was missing. So while I have been following CFB for 25 years, I have only been learning how to gamble for around six years. For the 20 years before that, I was basically playing with myself and keeping my bookies in business. lol

Respect your honesty Triple.  Most people on this site would not dare admit this, but rather pretend they are the best thing since bread and butter.  Although you may not be comfortable posting your picks, you are an asset  to the forum because you do provide a lot of info.  GL to you this year triple.

Thanks guys. I'm not trying to set a record here for the number of views. There are a lot of great cappers already on Covers to follow. I'm also not one of those guys in search of that fictional "World's Greatest Handicapper" trophy. I won a trophy once in Little League. That's good enough for me.

My theory is I'm just trying to come out richer at the end of the season and maybe learn a thing or two. If I have something to offer along the way, I will share it. If not I will try something crazy: I will shut up and listen. I know in 2009 it's taboo to actually obtain knowledge by listening, but I will go ahead and give it a try anyway. I'm old school. I still like the option for Christ sakes. lol

By the way CalBear, I signed on to cover the Pac 10 someplace and like I said above, I pride myself on listening.

I'm a huge fan of Jahvid Best. I don't get caught up in media hype but I think he may be more special than people realize. However, some on here think he is overrated. So because I want to cover the Pac 10 objectively, I decided to listen and see if they had an argument.

I went through my DirecTV channels and found six Cal games from last year. I taped them and watched them over. You know what I found when I re-watched those games? Best is better than I originally thought.

See, the reason I like to re-watch games is because on a Saturday afternoon, most of us are flipping between 10 games at once, so it's hard to see everything. So we all know about Best's game-breaking ability, which is the most explosive of any back in the country.

But what surprised me is how tough he is between the tackles. He actually doesn't mind running people over and he's extremely hard to bring down. And we are always blowing the offensive line, like there are no good running backs on the planet. Trust me, Best ran through a lot of paper thin holes and made something out of nothing many times in those games.

Throw in the below average quarterback play in five of those six games and I have no idea how any human being on the planet can say Best was overrated last season. I would like those people to sit next to me, watch those games over right by my side and tell what they see from Best that makes him overrated. The biggest misconception is he's just fast. He is so much more than that. If Best is healthy all year, I think he has a shot for 2,000 yards.

Like I said, I am not one to get drawn in by the hype but the season Best had in 2008 is one of the better seasons I have seen from a running back in some time. He is a very impressive player.

And by the way, there is a drop off with Vereen in there. He's a good player, but don't tell me there isn't a drop-off. There is. He isn't the complete back Best is at this point. I used to hear the same thing with Lynch and Forsett. The "no drop-off" line is one of the most overused in sports. There is a drop-off. That's why one guy is Jahvid Best and the other guy isn't.

I know one thing, that Minnesota defense could be in for a very long day when Best and Cal comes calling. I don't know if they have the speed to stop him.

That's all I'm going to say. I'm not going to argue. I listened to people who thought Best was overrated, I did my own research and I disagree. Maybe after this season I will change my mind but after his 2008 campaign, there is no way you can say that guy is overrated. He was a one-man wrecking crew. At least that's how it will be reported by me. lol

Triple, not only did Best do it with poor QB play (CAL passing offense ranked 83), but he did it with just over 16 carries per game.  That is what upset me about Tedford.  Sure he was returning kicks, but he needed more carries.  He needs to avg. at least 23-25 carries a game and needs to be utilized more in the passing game because he is effective as a receiver as well.  If he stays healthy and gets sufficient carries, I will not be surprised if he rakes up 2K yards putting him in legitimate contention for the Heisman.  And you are right, people have the misconception that he is just fast but he is also tough.  He played from late September on with a dislocated elbow and he still was not afraid to run thru people.  I’m not sure of his current weight, he played last year at about 193, but he hopes to get between 200-205 lbs this season.

 

By the way, I hope he doesn’t do anything to change your mind into believing he is overrated….lol.

I agree on both counts. Way too much of Vereen in some games. It's like USC. OK, those other guys are good but Stafon Johnson is better than all of them, so give him the damn ball. Wait until the 2010 draft and watch where Johnson goes. The only thing I will say to defend Tedford is like in the Oregon game Best was fighting through an injury, so that may have had something to do with his decision making with the low number of carries at times.

I thought the same thing about Best when I watched him play. Best can easily carry 205 on that frame. He can carry that with no problem at all and not lose any speed. He is actually built much thicker than I remembered him being from last season.

Here is the scary thing CalBear: Best is going to be even better in 2009, especially if Riley is worth a damn. It's a shame Pete Carroll won't let Stafon Johnson loose at SC or that would be one helluva battle between Best, Blount, Rodgers and Johnson out west.

Hey, how about those Pac 10 unders this year, maybe? Great running backs, solid defenses and maybe the weakest group of quarterbacks I've seen. Could be the lowest scoring year in the Pac 10 in a long time.

Triple- ditto, me.  Though I've been betting football for much longer than 6 yrs like you...still, I'm not a pro. I watch a ton of college ball and I know a ton about it.  It doesn't equate to winnings, however.  Which is why I've NEVER put myself in financial peril.  My biggest wager ever is $150, and I've done it probably 3 times in about 20 years.  I typically bet $25-$50 a game.  $50 is rare.  When the bank gets low, I'll wager $10, sometimes less.  I don't care.  It entertains me to no end.  I refuse to make it hurt.  Thus, WIFEY DOESN'T CARE(!), and I can keep my puny bankroll together for an entire season and learn more about some teams than I care to admit.

I don't post many picks unless I'm freakin' gung-ho on something like a Big 12 game that I'm particularly privy to.  2003 KSU vs OU in the championship game comes to mind (got laughed outta here).  Also UT with Vince Young in the NC game...I've seen the total hell a talented (and EXPERIENCED) dual threat can level on the greatest of teams, and I'll take it every time.

Though I don't typically post picks, I do post matchups and information on certain games I'm strong on, to get feedback.  I also track certain people's picks and comments (such as Nos and bookieassasin, for instance...there are plenty more- they come to mind since they've commented here).

Once again, I don't make it hurt and I never will.

In all honesty, gambling can be devastating if you don't go about it the right way. I know I'm stating the obvious here but I've seen some of my friends get in serious trouble doing this.

People don't talk about gambling in the same way as they do alcohol or drugs but in some ways it's worse because we are talking about money. If you drop $5,000 in a week and you make $40,000 in a year, you are in some big trouble.

Gambling is a blast, I love it. I look forward to it like it's Christmas. But I'm lucky that I have always had self control not to get myself in serious trouble. I guess that's the one bright spot of not being that good at it. lol Maybe if I started out ripping off 70 percent winners, I wouldn't have learned to be so careful.

The way I see it you bet what your comfortable betting. If it's $500, great. If it's $50, great. The bottom line is when the game is going and the money is on the line, the blood is still flowing and the heart is still pumping, right?

By the way, I have actually been gambling for 20 years. What I meant is I have only really started to learn how to gamble the past six years. Before that I was holding my pecker and flying blind. You know when you guys say "the public?" That was me. I would sit there and say, "Wow, Florida is only -12? That is a lock." Of course my dumb ass wouldn't think that Las Vegas was there for a reason and that number wasn't made for me to get rich and retire by the time I was 30.

That's what I meant when I said the day I sat down and said to myself there must be more to gambling than I realized because for a guy who knew general sports knowledge, I couldn't pick my freaking nose. Hence, most of the betting public.
