You guys got it all wrong. I am a lifetime Florida fan and attend every game home or away. If you followed the programs you would know that Randy Shannon made some pretty bad comments about Urban, the city of Gainesville and the University a few months ago. He even claimed that his best friend was shot and killed in Gainesville in the 90's, when in fact he had died just a year earlier of cancer. He was trying to show that Gainesville is just as dangerous as Miami for a college student to live (Insert laugh here).  Shannon is a scum bag and had it coming. If he hasdn't opened his mouth none of this would have happened.
 
Oh, and about Shannon's comments about how this may hurt recruiting, he is insane. What a great recruiting pitch. Come to UM because Urban ran the score up when they were killing our sorry program. Riiiiight

when some computer system is determining who is 1 and 2 at the end of the year, every point matters..and every good coach should know this. im a florida alum so my oppinion is totally biased but facts are facts. they had beaten us the past 6 meeting and it was time for us to stick it to them.  the bcs computers see the final score and dont know that they played us extremely tough and that we looked like total chit. all it knows is that we won 26-3. every point matters and it is a huge rivalry game not to mention randy shannon has ran his mouth about us in the past. just my 2 cents

You think there is a big difference between 23-3 and 26-3? 23-3 while easing up sounds better than 26-3 trying to run up the score and people talking about Florida running up the score late.

And Meyer knew the spread and took the field goal to cover. If he cared so much about the scoreboard he should have tried for the the touchdown so close to the goal line for a more impressive looking 30-3 score.

Also this is part of laying the massive points on the big programs. They seek to cover. Much like laying the heavy juice for favs in boxing and sometimes getting the benefit of questionable decisions... you pay for that in your bet.

I've seen a lot of shit in my day, but nothing quite like last night...I've followed Meyer since his covering days at Bowling Green, running up the score...I saw him put back in Alex Smith at CSU one Saturday night when they were laying like 28 so they could cover the spread...I've known him to be a very spread conscious coach...but never in my life have I seen a coach continue to throw with less than two minutes left and then kick a field goal on fourth down with 30 secs left...what it comes down to is you just can't bet against guys like Pour it on Pete, Urban Meyer and Jim Tressel at home because they know the number and will do whatever they can to cover it...occasionally you might get lucky but more often than not it's a losing proposition...I had Miami +23 and was pretty bitter last night as I've never seen shit like that go down before...oh well, onto the next game...

I like Tom Osborne's philosophy back when he coached Nebraska, who was beating teams all the time by big scores.

He coached his players to play their best at all times and never let up.

His teams were legendary.

When Spurrier was at Florida I remember him up big and trowing a hail mary one game and a long fg one game to cover.
 
Florida has a history of this when up big but not covering.  Was one reason I liked them as a big favorite against Hawaii and Miami.

I wish Dan Mullen and Urban Meyer would have went ahead and punched it in for 6. The Miami fans were absoloutly obnoxious all day in Gainesville. I saw several being carried out in hand cuffs before the game even started. When the refs reviewed Carl Moore's catch and ruled it complete the fans of "the U" (what is that supposed to mean anyway are the proud they are not a junior college) began throwing Gatoraide bottles onto Florida Field. One bottle almost hit a caine cheerleader in the head.
 
I must have heard 100 times over the course of the day that UF had not beat Miami since 1985. 23 years is along time. Tebow and Harvin wern't even born. UF was making up for lost time and I wish they would have doubled the spread.
 
Gainesville may be the top party school and a tough enviroment to visit but our fans are respectful, at least compared to Thug U.

Also, did you see Randy Shannon's hanshake, or lack there of, with Urban after the game. He just walked by and slapped Urban's hand. He didn't even look him in the eye. Too bad Shannon will be fired before the rematch in 2013. Go Gators.
 
Moral Victory-
Even when you start your coaching carrer with 6 wins and 8 losses, lose by 23 points to a rival that your school has not lost to in 23 years, and in doing so your team gains 140 yards, is a 50 yard field goal away from being shut out, fails to cross the opponets 25 yard line, is held to 1.6 ypc, and your future phenom QB throws for just 69 yards, you can still keep your heads held high, there are other types of victories to be had!

I can remember the "Ole Ball Coach"  throwing a hail mary pass at the end of a game against Vandy a few years back........florida was up 51-16.  

He didn't look so smug dragging his ass off the field last Thursday night.   What goes around comes around.

Randy Shannon and the Miami Hurricanes kicked a field goal at the end of the Texas A&M game on 9/20/07 when they were up 31-17 against an obviously inferior opponet.
 
Why not cover the spread if you have a chance. Keep the fans happy. Urban doesn't want to be the next Zooker who rarely covered.

Your field goal kicker passes up starting law school to return for another year at the request of the head coach. Your first game of the season does not present an opportunity to attempt a field goal. With 30 seconds left in your second game and up by 18 a situation presents itself against an instate rival. What coach in his right mind doesn't think of his kid rather than the other teams coach. Coach Meyer did the right thing.

Why are so many people making it seem like Meyer is the only coach who runs up the score a little bit? You guys must have had big money on Miami, the way you're bitching on this thread about running up the score

I could care less about the FG at the end, I didn't have money on the game either way.

But having your starters in at that point is just fucking stupid.  I hope the this situation presents itself again at some point this season and Baby Jeebus himself Timmy Tebone gets his leg broken in two places.

And as for the Florida fans who are so happy with the win.  Just remember you were taken to the 4th quarter by 40 freshman, a QB making his first ever start an offensive coordinator who ran 6 plays all game (HB dive, HB draw, screen left, screen right, 3 yd pass and 1 deep pass) and never showed signs of life until the referees gave you a gift with that over ruled incomplete pass.  Not something I would be hanging my hat on.

To the most delusional fans in football, enjoy your 2-3 loss season and hope you can back into a national championship again for the 3rd time sometime in the future.

If you don't notice the heavy whining on this forum then you are in denial.

In an era where polls help determine bowl game participants, teams aspiring to a bowl or national championship should run up the score as much as posssible.

That is reality.

Many people here need to accept reality and quit their whining.

That might be the dumbest thing i have ever heard. When Spurrier called for that bomb Bobby Johnson wasn't the coach and that had nothing to do with the loss he had @ Vandy.
