Carlos Adames vs Julian Williams betting preview

The hard-hitting Carlos Adames is making some noise in the post-Golovkin era of the middleweight division. He is recently coming off a third-round knockout of Juan Macias Montiel last October and showed his grit in a close decision win over Sergiy Deyrevenchenko before that. At 29, Adames is in the prime of his career and in a position to land a fight where he could potentially trade in his interim title for an official one.

Going into this fight, Adames has a minor advantage in reach, but a pronounced advantage in punching power and physical size. Adames switches between orthodox and southpaw, but his offense remains roughly the same. He paws a jab to the body, then throws clubbing hooks up top. He has good movement and hand speed.

The body punching and active hands on the inside will serve him well in this fight. Williams has the reputation of a slick boxer, but he’s easy to hit and has a wonky chin. With his opponent going 1-2 in his last three, and a pair of knockout losses each time he fought big punchers, Adames would be wise to press the action from the start, especially as he himself tends to gas on the back half.

It feels like a long time ago when Julian Williams shockingly upset Jarret Hurd to win a world title. Williams was a former standout at junior middleweight that has had a rocky go of things lately. After defeating Hurd, Williams lost back-to-back fights against relatively unknown fighters in Jeison Rosario and Vladimir Hernandez. He recently got back in the win column against journeyman Rolando Mansilla last November.

“J-Rock” fires off stiff shots and fights behind a methodical approach. Even though he is at his best on the outside, Williams has that Philly fighting spirit in him and can be drawn into a brawl. Inconsistency has plagued his career as of late, and his unreliable chin and conditioning have put his career in a precarious position.

Adames may be coming into his own, but Williams has the boxing chops to think his way to an upset. We’ve seen Adames struggle and waste energy trying to blast out his opponents early on, and he hasn’t scored a knockout past the sixth round. Williams needs to be on point defensively and needs a clear head to potentially win this fight while being behind on the cards.

Carlos Adames vs Julian Williams boxing prediction and best bet

Prediction: Adames moneyline

I have a difficult time seeing Williams winning this fight. Adames has improved tremendously since his upset loss to Patrick Teixeira four years ago, and Williams hasn’t been the same since beating Hurd. Though Williams might try to employ tactics to slow Adames down, he’ll eventually get caught and try to fight his way out of a hole.

I’m going with Adames to prevail over the flailing ex-champion Williams.

Prediction: Adames moneyline (-575 at DraftKings)

Best Bet: Adames to Win in Round 1-6

The minute Adames can close the distance, it will be a matter of time before Williams folds.

Williams’ conservative start might slow Adames down, but as history has demonstrated, he hasn’t gone past five rounds against a big puncher. I’m backing Adames to continue this trend, stopping Williams anywhere between the first and sixth round.

Prediction: Adames to Win in Round 1-6 (+210 at FanDuel)
