The World Cup is finally here, and while most fans are focused on who will lift the trophy, there are plenty of intriguing opportunities in the group stage.
With only three matches on the schedule, a favorable draw, home-field advantage, or a soft path to the knockout rounds can make all the difference. That's why some of the most interesting World Cup picks can be found before the Round of 32 even begins.
After breaking down every group, analyzing the latest World Cup odds, and making my World Cup predictions for the tournament, these are my three favorite group-stage picks heading into kickoff.

Canada vs Bosnia pick
Canada enters its World Cup opener as a slight favorite, but this matchup may be much more competitive than the odds suggest.
While much of the attention surrounding Canada centers on its explosive attack, the defensive side of the ball remains a concern. Jesse Marsch's side has kept just four clean sheets across their last 10 competitive fixtures.
That's what makes Bosnia a dangerous opening opponent.
Bosnia has seen both teams score in nine of its last 11 matches, a reflection of a squad that is capable of creating scoring chances but rarely shuts games down defensively. The Dragons have scored in 10 of those 11 contests, yet they've also managed just two clean sheets during that stretch.
Canada should have opportunities of its own. Jonathan David gives them a strike not many "underdogs" possess, while Cyle Larin and Tajon Buchanan provide plenty of attacking support. Playing on home soil, the Reds should generate enough chances to find the back of the net.
Prediction: Both teams to score (47¢)
Argentina vs Alegeria pick
Argentina is my pick to win the 2026 World Cup, and I expect Lionel Messi and company to make a statement in their tournament opener.
The reigning champions remain loaded with world-class talent across the pitch and have scored at least two goals in five straight matches entering the tournament. More importantly, Argentina rarely takes its foot off the gas against inferior opposition, making the two-goal spread an attractive option.
Algeria deserves respect after qualifying for the World Cup, but this is a significant step up in class. Goals have been hard to come by for the Desert Foxes against top competition, and they'll be facing one of the most organized defenses in the tournament.
A comfortable 2-0 or 3-0 victory feels like the most likely outcome, making Argentina -1.5 one of my favorite picks of the opening round.
Prediction: Argentina -1.5 (44¢)
To win Group E
If you're looking for a dark horse group winner, I've got my eye on Ecuador.
This is a team that quietly finished second in CONMEBOL qualifying, ahead of traditional powers like Brazil, Uruguay, and Colombia. That's not a fluke. Over 18 qualifying matches, Ecuador conceded just five goals — the fewest of any South American nation.
That's the foundation of this pick.
When you defend that well, you're going to be in every match, and that's especially important in the group stage, where a single result can completely change the standings.
Now, look at the group. Germany is the favorite, and understandably so, but I think the market is still giving them a little too much credit based on reputation. They're improved, but this isn't the dominant German side we've seen in the World Cups of the early 2000's.
Then there's Ivory Coast, a talented squad that can be dangerous on its day, but one that has struggled with consistency against top-level competition.
That leaves Ecuador sitting in a pretty interesting position, with boatloads of value.
Prediction: Ecuador to win Group E (22¢)
