Two teams that have had trouble finding wins as of late will face off on Sunday night as the Chicago Sky host the Phoenix Mercury at Wintrust Arena.

Chicago’s injury-plagued roster has made it difficult for it to compete, which is why I’m taking Phoenix to cover in my Mercury vs. Sky predictions.

Let’s dig deeper into tonight’s matchup in my free WNBA picks for Sunday, August 3.

Mercury vs Sky predictions

My Mercury vs Sky best bet: Mercury -13.5 (-112 at DraftKings)

The Phoenix Mercury have lost five of six and are 1-3 on their current round trip, while the Chicago Sky find itself in a seven-game losing streak in which they've failed to cover even a single time as an underdog. While these two teams are both struggling, it’s the Sky that find themselves in far worse shape.

Chicago is currently playing with a depleted roster. Already without Courtney Vandersloot for the season, the Sky are currently playing without Angel Reese, Ariel Atkins, and Hailey Van Lith.

Those absences have taken an already weak team and made it uncompetitive. During the seven-game losing streak, Chicago hadn’t managed to lose by single digits until Friday, when it held the expansion Valkyries to within seven points.

By head coach Nate Tibbetts’ own admission, the Mercury haven’t been playing with enough energy since the All-Star break, but Phoenix still has a talented roster, with Satou Sabally (17.2 ppg) and Alyssa Thomas (16.2 ppg) leading a team that averages 83.4 ppg.

The Mercury offense should overwhelm a Sky team that is second-last in the WNBA in defensive rating (109.5) and playing even worse without Reese in the lineup. I’m taking the Mercury to cover.

Mercury vs Sky same-game parlay (SGP)

Mercury -13.5

Over 166.5

Satou Sabally Over 15.5 points

I like the Mercury to cover in what should be a high-scoring game, so I’ll be add the Over in my SGP. The Over has hit in both games between these teams so far this season, and Phoenix’s fast-paced style should get us Over the total.

I also like Satou Sabally to rebound from her recent scoring funk and cash her Over against a weak opponent tonight.

Since joining Covers in 2022, Ed has offered his sports betting analysis primarily on MLB, NFL, college football, and college basketball games, but is willing to take on any sport.

His betting strategy focuses more on finding line value based on deviations from the market rather than traditional handicapping, primarily shopping between DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics in his home state of Connecticut, though he’s not afraid to do deep game analysis to find profitable bets at any book.

Outside of gambling, Ed is an avid curler who competes in mixed doubles on the World Curling Tour and runs a popular curling YouTube channel, Chess on Ice. That experience has come in handy during the Olympics, when he has proven to be a successful curling bettor as well.

Ed's advice to new bettors is to always open multiple sportsbook accounts and check the odds at each before placing any bet. Successful sports betting is about consistently beating the closing line value, which requires finding spots where one book is offering odds far better than the rest of the market and jumping on those opportunities.
