Team World pulled off what proved to be a remarkable upset at the 2022 Laver Cup, winning for the first time in five tries against the vaunted Team Europe.

The 2023 Laver Cup represents something of a change for Team Europe as, in addition to Roger Federer's departure, neither Rafael Nadal nor Novak Djokovic will be taking part.

Will this open up an opportunity for John McEnroe's squad to make it two in a row or will the young Europeans show that they don't miss the vets after all? The Laver Cup starts on Friday, September 22, and runs through Sunday, September 24.

Laver Cup rosters and odds analysis

Casper Ruud Felix Auger-Aliassime
Stefanos Tsitsipas Taylor Fritz
Andrey Rublev Frances Tiafoe
Holger Rune Tommy Paul
Hubert Hurkacz Francisco Cerundolo
Gael Monfils Ben Shelton

Milos Raonic (alternate)

Team Europe (+200)

When odds first opened at Caesars, Team Europe was listed as a slight betting favorite despite not having any of the big three (Djokovic, Nadal, Federer). Those odds are no longer available. Instead, the Europeans are now listed as considerable underdogs heading into the tournament even though you can't say they're wanting for talent.

None of the Top 3 players from the latest ATP rankings are represented at the Laver Cup, but Team Europe has the next three (Holger Rune, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Andrey Rublev) as well as Casper Ruud (9th). With four Top-10 players in the world, it stands to reason why Team Europe is considered the betting favorite heading into play.

If there is a weak link, it might be 37-year-old Gael Monfils, who only recently attempted a comeback in 2023 after sitting out much of 2022 due to injuries.

Team World (-280)

Team World had a steep climb last year and managed to overcome the odds to win the Laver Cup for the first time. This was especially impressive considering the lopsided 14-1 loss in 2021. And while the team opened as the underdog, it's now heavily favored even if it doesn't have as many top-ranked players on the roster.

Taylor Fritz is ranked No. 8 in the ATP standings and Frances Tiafoe, Tommy Paul, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Ben Shelton are each ranked within the Top 20. Fritz, Tiafoe, and Shelton all reached the quarterfinals of the US Open — the most recent Grand Slam — with Shelton advancing to the semis. Only Rublev from Team Europe cracked the quarters.

Previous Laver Cup results

The inaugural Laver Cup was held in 2017 in Prague. Named after tennis legend Rod Laver, the 2023 edition will mark the sixth time the event will be held (the 2020 Laver Cup was canceled due to the COVID pandemic).

2022 World def. Europe 13-8
2021 Europe def. World 14-1
2019 Europe def. World 13-11
2018 Europe def. World 13-8
2017 Europe def. World 15-9
