This game should have a nice offensive rhythm to it. These programs rank 13th and 16th in seconds per play through four games while ranking in the 100s in opposing yards per game on defense (NMSU 101st at 423 ypg, WKU 132nd at 497.3 ypg). Yes, the Hilltopers have struggled offensively, but two of their four games came against the elite defenses of Georgia and Indiana. This is a coin-flip contest that should see the ball moving in both directions.
This will be Northwestern’s lowest total of the season, while Penn State’s lowest came last week against Wisconsin at 43.5, with that game still producing 44 points. The Wildcats are 3-0 to the over, while the Nittany Lions are 2-2. Although the samples are small, Northwestern has consistently shown an ability to move the ball. Meanwhile, Marshall, Temple and Buffalo combined for just 22 points against Penn State’s defense. If Northwestern can reach 20 points, there is a strong path for this matchup to clear 46.5.
Northwestern could be an intriguing underdog in Week 5 if the Wildcats reach +3.5 against Penn State. Northwestern is 3-0 against the spread and 2-1 straight up, with its lone loss coming by six points to No. 6 Indiana. Meanwhile, Penn State enters following a brutal outright loss to Wisconsin as a 10.5-point favorite, creating a potential bounce-back spot. The Wildcats will also make their debut at the brand-new Ryan Field, giving the home crowd plenty to be excited about. Northwestern’s strong start, recent competitiveness and home-field energy make the Wildcats an appealing look if the number reaches +3 or +3.5.
While Michigan is coming off a walk-off loss to Iowa and Minnesota just beat Washington, the Wolverines have dominated the Little Brown Jug series. Michigan is 44-4 against Minnesota since 1968, and the Wolverines have covered in 9 of the last 12 matchups. I'm expecting Kyle Whittingham to have Michigan motivated to bounce back, and for Gophers QB Drake Lindsey to struggle against this defense. I like the Wolverines to cover -5.5 or better.
North Carolina has not faced anything close to the talent level of the Fighting Irish defense. The Tar Heels scored 20 points against Clemson, but 14 came in the first quarter before they were shut out over the final three quarters.
Now, they face a Notre Dame defense that ranks No. 1 in points allowed per game, surrendering just 8.3 points through the first few weeks of the season. The Fighting Irish also rank No. 1 in yards allowed, giving up a hair below 200 per game.
Any scoring in this matchup should come courtesy of the blue and metallic gold.
Notre Dame should have no trouble staying focused with Stanford and BYU still ahead on the schedule, while North Carolina enters off a bye following its loss to Clemson. Although the Tar Heels have improved significantly under Bill Belichick, they face a much tougher test against one of the nation’s elite defenses. Notre Dame has dominated defensively this season and should be able to control the game from start to finish. Expect a low-scoring matchup, with the Fighting Irish limiting North Carolina’s offense and creating enough separation to cover the 21.5-point spread.
One of the great mysteries of college football is Missouri's ability to stay ranked despite almost always lacking quality wins. Mizzou is 7-20 against AP Top-25 opponents since 2020 (including 5-8 at home) and is also 0-16 against SEC teams that go on to finish the season with a winning record in SEC play. Meanwhile, Jon Sumrall has the Gators rolling again and is coming off a 52-28 win over Ole Miss, in which they rumbled for 300+ yards on the ground. I expect that level to travel on Saturday.
I don't think the market can catch up with this Florida offense, who I think has the best offense in the country. In their three games vs FBS opponents, they've gone over the total by an average of 26 PPG! On the other side, I like Missouri's quarterback and I expect their offense to be able to score well into the 20s, maybe even the 30s.
This is a big road spread for Ohio State, with GameDay on campus for Iowa, but I like the Buckeyes at -13.5 or better. The Hawkeyes are coming off a jaw-dropping win and don't match up well with Ohio State. Led by Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith, Ohio State's offense ranks No. 4 in EPA per pass, while Iowa's defense ranks just 66th. Defensively, the Buckeyes' secondary is the toughest Hank Brown will see all season, and Iowa's inability to run the ball is a problem.
Washington's defense has been stingy, allowing just 16.8 ppg on 289.3 total yards per game. The defensive front (7.0 TFLs per game, third in stuff rate) could present issues, and USC can injury concerns at WR with Trent Mosley and Corey Simms absent against Oregon and Tanook Hines at far less than 100%.
USC hasn't proven enough to be deserving of a two-score spread against a game conference opponent, so I'd play Washington down to +7.5. The Trojans are much worse defensively (108th in EPA per play, 134th in PFF's tackling grade) than Washington (10th in EPA per play), and therefore the Huskies warrant a play as the underdog.
I think this will close at 4.5, maybe even 5, so let's get infront of this. What I like most about this for Arizona State is the spot. They're coming off a bye and they haven't been at home in a while. Statistically, Arizona State is better in yards per play margin, despite the fact that they've played a tougher schedule.

As human beings, we're bound to be biased with our picks and potentially fall into the trap of swinging with the public. With advanced stats growing in popularity and getting harder to track, college football computer predictions are starting to become more relied on.
Betting on a moneyline simply means you're picking the outright winner of the game, regardless of the scoring margin or total. If the team you choose wins, then your bet hits. Here's what it will look like over at your favorite sportsbook:
| Team | Moneyline |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -120 |
| Missouri Tigers | +150 |
In this case, Alabama is favored to win the game as its moneyline odds have a minus sign (-) in front of the number. The favorites will have the minus sign present, and the underdogs will have a plus sign (+). Easy, right?
Betting the spread gives your bet a bit more breathing room. Here, you don't need to sweat out a team to win. Instead, you can wager on the point differential on the scoreboard.
Betting on the spread is a good idea when the moneyline profits aren't enticing. There's no point betting on Alabama as a heavy -1500 favorite over Missouri. But taking Missouri to keep the scoring margin within a certain frame will get you more bang for your buck.
| Team | Spread |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | -24.5 (-105) |
| Missouri Tigers | +24.5 (-115) |
In this example, the Tide are favored to dominate their game against Missouri, outperforming them by at least 24.5 points.
If Alabama does win by more than 25 points, that would mean the Crimson Tide covered the spread. But if the Tide won by just 20 points, then that would mean the Tigers "covered the spread" instead.
If you think the outcome of a game could flip in either direction, then an Over/Under is the way to go. This bet relies on the combined score from both teams and whether it goes Over or Under the point total listed at sportsbooks. Then, who cares who wins?
| Team | Total |
|---|---|
| Alabama Crimson Tide | O 52.5 (-110) |
| Missouri Tigers | U 52.5 (-110) |
In this example, oddsmakers have set the total score for the game at 52.5 points. The choice is now up to you. If you think the Tide and Tigers will score a combined total of more than 52.5 points, 53 points or more, then pick the Over. If you're thinking otherwise, then bet the Under, and the bet will hit if they score fewer than 52.5 points.
If the set number was a whole number like 52 points and the two teams score exactly that amount, then it is considered a push and you'd get your money back.
