Fresno State @ Nebraska preview

THE STORY: Nebraska opened its first season as a member of the Big Ten Conference with an uneven 40-7 victory over Chattanooga. Despite poor execution - including 12 negative plays in the game and a number of ball-security issues in the first half - quarterback Taylor Martinez rushed for 135 yards and three touchdowns, and showed no ill effects from the toe and ankle injuries that robbed him of his breathtaking speed and quickness last season. Fresno State was not as fortunate in its opener as it fell 36-21 to California. The Bulldogs managed only 210 total yards against the Golden Bears in a game that featured 20 penalties, including nine by Fresno State. New starting quarterback Derek Carr - the younger brother of former NFL No. 1 overall draft pick David - threw for only 142 yards and was sacked four times.

ABOUT NEBRASKA (1-0): The Huskers broke in four new starters on the offensive line last week, including right tackle Tyler Moore, who became the first freshman lineman to start an opener for Nebraska. On defense, the team is hoping to have cornerback Alfonzo Dennard after the preseason All-American candidate missed the opener with a pulled leg muscle. Martinez didn't do quite so well with his throwing arm against Chattanooga - he was 11-of-22 for 116 yards.
ABOUT FRESNO STATE (0-1): Fresno State also welcomed four new starters on its offensive line in the loss to California, but quickly lost what little experience it had up front when junior center Richard Helepiko left with an ankle injury and was replaced by freshman Cody Wichmann. The injury - according to coach Pat Hill - caused the team to make three moves along the line.
EXTRA POINTS
1. The Huskers have won 21 consecutive meetings against WAC foes since a 6-0 loss to Hawaii in 1955.
2. The Bulldogs have lost six straight meetings against top 10 opponents since a 44-24 victory over No. 10 Oregon State in 2001.
3. Fresno State is 17-16 in its last 33 games against BCS opponents.
PREDICTION: Nebraska 34, Fresno State 10 - After struggling to find offense against California, the Bulldogs may need a few breaks to score on the Huskers. Although Fresno State has a history as a giant-slayer, its young offensive line will likely be their undoing in the first meeting between the schools.
