Stony Brook @ South Florida preview
Raymond James Stadium
The University of South Florida will take the field this Saturday night with a new coach. For the first time in the school’s brief football history, Jim Leavitt will not be on the sidelines. The only coach the Bulls have ever had, Leavitt was fired last winter after being accused of grabbing a player by the throat and slapping him. Leavitt had coached every game for USF from 1997-2009.
Former East Carolina Coach Skip Holtz has replaced Leavitt and the Bulls open the 2010 season at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa against Stony Brook, a Football Championship Subdivision team that is in the Big South Conference. Holtz brought the Pirates to back-to-back Conference USA Championships as ECU won nine games in both 2008 and 2009.
USF was ranked nationally last fall after getting off to a 5-0 start including victories over both Florida State and Syracuse. The Bulls dropped two of the next three but finished 8-5. Leading the offensive is sophomore quarterback B. J. Daniels who led USF in 2009 in both running and passing. Daniels became the starter when veteran signal-caller Matt Grothe went down early in the season with an injury. Daniels, in turn, started ten games and ran for nine touchdowns and threw for 14 more scores. The Bulls scored 93% of the time they were in the Red Zone last fall and averaged 365 yards of total offense per game. The USF offensive line is anchored by center Samson Genus, a 6-1, 314 pound all-conference performer.
Stony Brook, 6-5 a year ago, plays their first game against a Football Bowl Subdivision team. They visit Tampa with ten starters back from last year’s team as well as adding two FBS, 3 FCS, and 3 junior college transfers. Coach Chuck Priore, now in his fifth season with the Seawolves, has an overall 22-22 record. Stony Brook returns two experienced quarterbacks, their top rusher, and four experienced receivers. Returning JC transfer Michael Coulter won the quarterback position last fall and threw for 2,060 yards, including 15 touchdowns. Leading rusher Edwin Gowins, who ran for 890 yards and nine touchdowns, returns as well as a number of receivers led by Donald Porter. The Seawolves offensive line has been depleted via graduation and the defense returns just four starters but has added 5 transfers. Stony Brook tied as co-champion of the Big South Conference last fall.
Priore previously coached at Division III Trinity College in Connecticut where he won four consecutive New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) titles and led the Bantams to a 30-game winning streak. He assumed the role of head coach at Stony Brook on December 10, 2005.
