Eric Fedde draws a difficult matchup against one of baseball's toughest lineups to strike out. The veteran right hander has struggled to miss bats all season, especially on the road, where his strikeout rate, whiff rate, and chase rate all take a noticeable dip. Those trends have continued over his recent starts, and Batters-Box trends also points toward another low strikeout outing in this matchup. Tampa Bay consistently puts the ball in play, making it difficult for opposing pitchers to rack up punchouts. With the matchup working against him, Fedde under 3.5 strikeouts is my favorite angle in this game.
The Under 8.5 has a path through two modest offenses and strong bullpen form. Tampa Bay and Chicago both own 92 wRC+ marks recently, while the Rays relief corps has dominated with a 1.88 xERA. If Martinez keeps Chicago quiet, runs could be limited after Fedde exits tonight.
CJ Abrams continues to swing one of the hottest bats in baseball and finds himself in another favorable matchup Friday night. The Nationals shortstop has crushed right handed pitching recently, pairing elite production with excellent quality of contact. He will face Bryce Elder, who has consistently struggled to retire left handed hitters and has allowed plenty of hard contact and extra base damage. Washington's offense has also been rolling, creating another strong run producing environment. While Abrams' Batters-Box elite rating trends are only average, the matchup and current form make him a strong candidate to clear his total bases prop.
James Wood is one of my favorite home run looks on Friday's slate. The Nationals slugger earns an elite Batters-Box rating while covering 93.8% of Bryce Elder's pitch mix, giving him a strong matchup on paper. Wood has also been scorching right handed pitching lately, producing plenty of hard contact and barrels. Meanwhile, Elder has been getting hammered by left handed hitters, allowing elite expected numbers along with high hard hit, barrel, and elevation rates over his recent sample. With Wood due for a long ball after six straight elite rated appearances without one, this feels like an ideal spot for him to go deep.
Nathan Eovaldi is an excellent strikeout artist but ranks in the 34th percentile in barrel rate. That could get him into trouble against the Houston Astros, who sit fourth in ISO vs. right-handed pitching in July.
Texas holds down the seventh slot in ISO against righties this month while also cracking the Top-10 in hard hit rate and fly ball percentage.
Bet the Over to -125.
Hunter Goodman may be in a bit of a slump, but his underlying metrics suggest a breakout is coming. The Rockies catcher continues to barrel the baseball at an elite rate while generating plenty of hard contact against right handed pitching. He also draws a favorable matchup against Michael Wacha, who has struggled to limit quality contact from right handed hitters and doesn't generate many strikeouts. That combination should give Goodman plenty of opportunities to do damage at Coors Field. While the price is inflated because of the ballpark, Goodman still has a strong path to clearing 1.5 total bases tonight.
The Brewers are set up nicely to bounce back after Wednesday’s blowout loss. They've been strong in games after a loss this season and own an MLB-best 11-4 record following a day off. They'll face Angels youngster Ryan Johnson, who owns an ugly 7.34 ERA and has been smacked around in multiple starts. With Milwaukee ranking second in OPS over the past week and Los Angeles sitting 27th in OPS in July, Shane Drohan is well-positioned to lead the Brewers to a comfortable win.
The Detroit Tigers can be had for a reasonable price after the market pounced on the A's side when projected starter Casey Mize was scratched. Enter Ty Madden, who's been great (2.72 xERA, 2.99 FIP) across 27 innings in the big leagues. Detroit is fresh off a day of rest, so the bullpen behind him will have every notable arm available. Play the Tigers to -140.
The Tigers rank bottom five in wOBA (.277) and wRC+ (74) against lefties in July. The Athletics have cashed the Under in five consecutive home games, and this looks like another inflated total at Sutter Health Park after Casey Mize was scratched.
Rafael Devers tops Batters-Box's ratings today, marking his 260th elite rated matchup over the last three seasons. He has homered in 22.39% of his previous 259 elite rated games, and tonight's matchup is another favorable one. Germán Márquez has been crushed by left handed hitters all season, allowing a ton of contact, plenty of elevation, and elite expected numbers. While Devers' pitch coverage is lowered by a limited sample against Márquez's knuckle curve, he grades out extremely well against the rest of his arsenal. Combined with Devers' recent form, this sets up as an outstanding opportunity for a long ball.
The Under 8.5 fits because both lineups have lacked power lately. San Francisco owns a .151 ISO over its last seven games, while San Diego sits at just .091 over its last six. With both bullpens limiting damage and homers, this matchup has a clear path to stay contained.
Ranger Suárez will make his second start since returning from a groin injury. In his first outing on July 26 against the Blue Jays, he threw just four scoreless innings on 64 pitches while striking out six, suggesting the Red Sox are still easing him back. Against the Dodgers' patient lineup, this could be another short outing, exposing Boston's middle relievers. The matchup is also dangerous for Suárez, whose heavy sinker lives at the bottom of the zone and relies on weak ground balls. The Dodgers match up well against that profile, with right-handed hitters like Mookie Betts and Andy Pages owning swing paths built to attack low pitches. Polymarket has Los Angeles at a 54-cent favorite, but I make them closer to 58 cents, so I'm hitting the button.
Ranger Suarez (3.02 ERA, 3.19 xFIP) has posted excellent run suppression numbers and deservedly so.
The Dodgers aren't in great form offensively, and that's not handedness specific. Los Angeles slots 18th against lefties in wOBA this month.
I don't see the Boston Red Sox, who are 16th in wOBA vs. righties in July, lighting up the Dodgers bullpen, and that's probably necessary to go Over.
Play the Under to -120.
Randy Arozarena is in a premium matchup against Zebby Matthews, who has struggled throughout the season and has been especially vulnerable away from home. Matthews has also been hit hard by right handed batters recently, allowing plenty of quality contact and power. Arozarena enters this matchup swinging a scorching hot bat against right handed pitching, backed by elite hard hit and barrel rates over his recent sample. Batters-Box also grades him with an elite matchup rating, while also having incredible arsenal coverage against Matthews' offerings. Everything lines up for Arozarena to continue his hot streak in a favorable home matchup.
Pittsburgh’s pitching efficiency carries the day here, posting a sixth-ranked 3.10 SIERA alongside a robust 19.7% K-BB% rate. Braxton Ashcraft matches up against Andrew Abbott, where Cincinnati’s offensive struggles (83 wRC+) and high strikeout tendency (26.4% K%) make the Pirates a clean road target.
We saw just how ineffective these offenses can be with barrel suppression yesterday in a 2-0 Yankees win. I'm backing another low-scoring affair and would play the Under to 6, particularly considering the weather in store.
Rain and wind blowing in at Wrigley are not small variables, especially with the pitchers in mind.
Fried fits the weather. His 50% ground-ball rate and almost non-existent barrel rate make it difficult for the Cubbies to create power. Peterson’s overall profile is shakier, but he still owns a 49% ground-ball rate, and the weather helps cover some of his air-contact risk.
I'm backing the New York Yankees and I'd play them down to -130. The reason is simple: Max Fried.
He has allowed just a 2% barrel rate and .247 xwOBA this season. That’s a strong fit against an up-and-down Chicago Cubs offense.
Veteran David Peterson hasn't been a disaster, but he will be more solvable. He owns a 5.14 xERA, .429 xSLG allowed, and just a 18% strikeout rate. It gets most of his success out of his 80th percentile ground-ball rate. That could keep the Yankees' bats quiet for long stretches, but eventually the underlying metrics will catch up with him in a game of thin margins.
Okamoto's hitting profile perfectly matches up well against Imanaga’s stuff. The Cubs starter throws a heavy dose of the fastball and gets barreled up at a 10.4% rate. The Jays third baseman barrels the ball better than anyone in the Blue Jays lineup with a 13.5% barrel rate, while owning a 63.2% hard hit rate against the four-seamer.
Atlanta and Chicago send two of the best lineups in baseball to the dish, and they respectively rank eighth and third in wOBA against lefties for the campaign. The two clubs have also trended to the Over, and I'm particularly expecting White Sox southpaw Anthony Kay to struggle considering he's saddled with the fifth-highest xERA in baseball among the 100 pitchers with at least 60 innings this year.
I'm fading Chicago White Sox lefty Anthony Kay on Thursday. He's sporting the fifth-highest xERA among the 100 pitchers with at least 60 innings, after all. Plus, the Atlanta Braves enter ranked eighth in wOBA against southpaws for the season and sixth in overall xwOBA across the past 14 days.
The Yankees rank Top-3 in OPS, ISO, OBP, xWOBA, and hard hit rate when facing left-handed pitching. The Red Sox have hit righties very well over the past four weeks, sitting ninth in wOBA, ninth in ISO, and fourth in batting average. Play the Over to -120.
Ranger Suarez has started four games against teams ranking Top-10 in OPS vs. left-handed pitching, allowing 13 runs and posting a 6.13 ERA during those games. The New York Yankees lead the majors in OPS against lefties so they’re a prime candidate to cause Suarez problems. Playable to -145.
The Braves have dropped five of six while averaging just 2.8 runs per game and ranking 29th in wOBA without Ronald Acuna Jr. (hamstring), and it’s been a smoke-and-mirrors start for veteran lefty Martin Perez, and there’s serious statistical correction ahead of his .230 BABIP and 80.2% strand rate considering they’re both high-end marks about pitchers with at least 60 innings this season. San Francisco is just the offense to kick-start the regression, too. The Giants are pacing the majors in wOBA and fourth in xwOBA over the past 30 days, after all.
Our experts and prediction models are hard at work analyzing the data. Check back shortly for today's picks, or explore our Computer Picks for inspiration.
MLB picks are bet suggestions based on our computer's assessment of the game. Tons of betting data goes into a computer pick, including pitching matchups, injury reports, analytics, and even recent betting trends.
You can use the tables above to help with your bets during the MLB season. The first section includes free, computer-generated picks for daily Major League Baseball games. Baseball bettors can choose to follow the computer, fade the computer, or simply use our computer picks as one element of their betting strategy.
This page also tees up access to deeper betting trends. For example, if a club's run line is favored, you can check their ATS trends, potentially opening up some quality underdog bets.
If you're ready to get started with MLB betting, visit our dedicated page highlighting the best MLB betting sites.
This is the most common and easiest wager for a bettor to make when it comes to MLB picks. Basically, to win an MLB moneyline pick, you just have to choose which team will win the game.
It's simple: if you bet the White Sox moneyline over the Red Sox and Chicago wins, you win your bet.
The run line is another name for a point spread that you may be more familiar with in NBA and NFL betting. A point spread varies in the NFL and NBA from as little as 0.5 points up to double-digit spreads. A baseball run line is almost always a 1.5-point spread.
The favorite will be -1.5 while the underdog will be +1.5. At the end of the game, if you take away 1.5 runs from the favorite or add 1.5 runs to the underdog and they end up winning the game, you win your MLB pick against the spread.
Another common wager is to bet on the total in baseball, which is a bet on the total runs scored in the baseball game. You are simply choosing whether the final score will be Over or Under that total. Betting the Over/Under on a matchup is a great way to get started in MLB score predictions.
A new and emerging MLB betting market is the NRFI/YRFI bet. These are quick-hitters in which you make a wager on the O/U total of the first inning, typically set at 0.5 runs. Thus, the bet is coined as No Run First Inning or Yes Run First Inning. No need to wait a couple of hours to cash a bet when it could be done in 20 minutes or less.
The above options, moneyline, run line, and Over/Under, can also be placed on the first five innings of a game rather than the full game. Many experienced bettors will use this approach because, typically, this will take bullpens out of the equation and make your job researching the game easier. After all, you can just focus on the starting pitchers.
If you want to combine multiple games into one mega wager, you may consider making a parlay bet. A parlay is when you pick two or more MLB games on one single betting ticket, which will increase the payout of your bet.
But it also comes with more risk, as each of those MLB picks must hit for your ticket to pay out. Our parlay calculator is a great tool to find out what your potential payout would be.
If you're looking for more MLB picks content, check out our consensus picks and prop bets pages to get your fix. While you're at it, head over to our MLB promos page to get the best bang for your buck.
Player props are a great way to hone in on an individual matchup for a game. These types of wagers will be individualized for a player: Will Shohei Ohtani hit a home run? Will Gerrit Cole get seven strikeouts? Will Paul Skenes allow two earned runs?
You simply choose whether this outcome will happen or not. Keeping up to date on daily pitching matchups and batters on a hot streak can give you a huge boost when placing player prop bets.
Lastly, prior to the season and even throughout the season, you can place futures bets on all the long-term awards and outcomes. You can lock in an MLB pick on who will win their division, which squad will win the World Series, or even who will win the Rookie of the Year, MVP, or Cy Young.
