THE STORY: The Atlanta Braves placed All-Star pitcher Jair Jurrjens on the 15-day disabled list and will start Mike Minor in his place in the finale of a three-game series against the host New York Mets on Sunday. Jurrjens is 0-1 with a 6.26 ERA since the break and has been suffering from pain and inflammation in his surgically repaired right knee. He is expected to miss two starts. The Mets snapped a five-game losing streak Saturday and have won six of 11 games against the Braves.
TV: 1:10 p.m. ET, TBS, SNY (New York), FS South (Atlanta)
PITCHING MATCHUP: Braves LH Mike Minor (1-2, 4.59 ERA) vs. Mets RH Dillon Gee (10-3, 3.59).
Minor has made six starts this season, but has been with Triple A Gwinnett since his last big-league start on June 21, a victory over Toronto. Minor pitched seven innings, struck out eight and gave up only one run in that outing. Minor was 4-5 with a 3.13 ERA in 13 starts with Gwinnett. He is 1-0 with a 6.75 ERA in two career starts against New York. He allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings against the Mets on June 16, getting a no-decision in a game the Braves eventually won. Gee has won his last two decisions, most recently throwing 6 2/3 innings in a win over Washington. Since the All-Star Game, he is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in three starts. His biggest problem over that stretch has been walks - Gee has nine against only 10 strikeouts over the span of 18 2/3 innings. Gee has made four career starts against the Braves, going 2-1 with a 1.52 ERA. He threw seven shutout innings against Atlanta on June 4.
ABOUT THE BRAVES (65-49): Chipper Jones was back in the Atlanta lineup Saturday, but was in the No. 5 spot. The last times Jones hit there was in 2005, also when he was coming off the disabled list. Manager Fredi Gonzalez didn’t want to tinker with the surging offense provide by Dan Uggla (who has hit safely in 27 straight) and Freddie Freeman (who has hit safely in 20 straight). The return of Jones allowed Martin Prado to move back to left field and Gonzalez opted to keep Jose Constanza in the lineup and sit Jason Heyward.
ABOUT THE METS (56-56): After taking the collar in the first game of the series, Jose Reyes came back to record his 50th multi-hit game of the season. Justin Turner hit two homers Saturday, the first multi-homer game of his career. His four-RBI performance was the second-best, one shy of the five he netted against the Astros on May 15. Turner had been in a 4-for-27 slump. Daniel Murphy is 25-for-56 (.446) in in the first inning. Jason Bay is 13-for-31 (.419) over his last 11 games.
FINAL PITCH: Atlanta catcher Brian McCann said he may be able to immediately return to the lineup when he is eligible to come off the disabled list from a strained oblique. McCann hit off a tee Friday and took some swings in an indoor cage Saturday. He has caught in the bullpen and played catch, and is considered ahead of schedule. McCann may play in a couple minor league games before he is activated.
