THE STORY: The Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers enjoy a brief respite from interleague play Monday when the clubs face off in a makeup game at Comerica Park. The game was originally scheduled for May 17, but persistent rain showers prevented the teams from taking the field. Detroit hurler Max Scherzer looks to join the 10-win club against Toronto counterpart Zach Stewart.
TV: 6:05 p.m. ET, Rogers Sportsnet, Fox Sports Detroit
PITCHING MATCHUP: Blue Jays RH Zach Stewart (0-1, 5.91 ERA) vs. Tigers RH Max Scherzer (9-3, 4.61 ERA).
Stewart will be making his third major-league start following mixed results in his first two outings. He was torched for five runs on 10 hits in just 3 2/3 innings last time out, dropping a 5-1 decision to Atlanta for his first major-league defeat. The 24-year-old is allowing opposing hitters to bat a lofty .395 against him through 10 2/3 innings so far.
Scherzer takes another shot at win No. 10 after being denied in his previous outing. He allowed six runs over six innings of a 6-1 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers, a defeat that halted a personal three-game winning streak. Scherzer is 2-0 in three career starts against the Blue Jays, boasting a 1.35 ERA in 20 strong innings.
ABOUT THE BLUE JAYS (39-39): Toronto had an up-and-down journey through a pair of National League cities, getting swept by the Braves in Atlanta before executing its own sweep of the host St. Louis Cardinals. The Jays face a familiar foe Monday in Scherzer, who settled for a no-decision against them in his previous encounter despite allowing just one unearned run over seven innings. Toronto slugger Jose Bautista has thrived against Scherzer, going 5-for-8 in his career with a home run and a pair of RBIs. Shortstop Yunel Escobar has also had Scherzer's number, batting a sizzling .500 (10-for-20) with a homer and three RBIs.
ABOUT THE TIGERS (42-36): The Tigers are surging after taking two of three from Scherzer's old team, the Arizona Diamondbacks. To keep the good times rolling, they'll need more out of slugger Miguel Cabrera then they've received so far in their season series against Toronto. The imposing first baseman has just one hit in 15 at-bats versus the Blue Jays in 2011. Infielder Jhonny Peralta has been Detroit's most dangerous weapon against Toronto so far, hitting 9-for-21 with a pair of homers and five RBIs in five games. The Tigers lead the season set 3-2, with Scherzer having pitched in each of the last two encounters between the clubs.
FINAL PITCH: Monday's game features two of the most walked hitters in the majors. Jose Bautista leads baseball with 65 free passes while Cabrera is third with 59.
