Villarreal vs Bayern Munich predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Side analysis

We have another huge Champions League clash with Villarreal looking to secure an advantage in this first leg game with Bayern Munich.

Villarreal have already eliminated one European giant, Juventus, and are hoping to add another scalp. These two clubs are having very different seasons domestically with the Spanish side sitting seventh in the La Liga table.

Villareal only qualified for this tournament last season after winning the Europa League, and it looks likely that they’ll need to win the Champions League this season if they’re going to have any hope of playing in it next year.

Bayern meanwhile, are yet again cruising to another Bundesliga title. They’ve been the best team in Germany for what feels like a lifetime and with a nine-point cushion ahead of a disjointed Dortmund team, it’s another formality. That probably does the Bavarian side a disservice, as this is a truly exceptional team with talent from front to back.

In 28 Bundesliga games, they’ve scored 85 goals and conceded just 29. In the group stage of this competition, despite being paired with Benfica, Barcelona, and Dynamo Kyiv, they still scored 22 goals and gave up just three.

Those are elite numbers and they show exactly why they are -185 favorites to win this game. Even at that price, I’d argue it’s good value, and it’s hard to see anything but another Bayern win here.

Bayern Munich has won 26 of their past 29 Champions League games, and when the going gets tough they always show up. They drew 1-1 with RB Salzburg in the previous round, then in the second leg when many thought there could be an upset, they won 7-1.

Julian Nagelsmann will set his team up in their customary 4-2-3-1 with Thomas Muller sitting behind Robert Lewandowski and likely flanked by Leroy Sane and Kingsley Coman, with the incredible axis of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka in place as well.

There aren’t many teams in recent memory that can boast quality like that, with each of those players capable of changing a game by themselves. The engine room of Goretzka and Kimmich run the hard yards, but as well as breaking up play, they have incredible distribution with Kimmich being the most versatile player in the game.

Leroy Sane struggled when he first arrived back in Germany, but the former Man City player has been exceptional this year and offers a direct dribbling threat that will concern Villarreal. If he and Coman can get running in space at Villarreal’s fullbacks, then they’ll be able to tee up Lewandowski to add to his outrageous goal tally.

The Pole has already scored 45 goals for Bayern this season and will be confident adding more on Wednesday. Villarreal’s hopes will rely on the creativity of Dani Parejo and the goal threat of Gerard Moreno, but it’s unlikely that they’ll be able to do much to stop the machine that is Bayern Munich, who are a must-bet despite the odds.

Prediction: Bayern Munich (-188 at Bet365)

Over/Under analysis

We’ve already mentioned Bayern’s 22 Champions League goals this year, and the incredible 45 goal tally that Robert Lewandowski has accrued this season, so it’s no surprise that we’ll be backing Over 2.5 goals here.

There have been Over 2.5 goals scored in seven of Bayern’s past eight Champions League games which bodes well for this game, especially when Bayern’s past four games in all competitions have seen them score 16 goals.

Villarreal are capable of finding the back of the net too, having scored four in their two games against Juventus which also makes me feel more comfortable with this landing.

Prediction: Over 2.5 goals (-175 at Bet365)

Best bet

There are plenty of reasons to tune in whenever Bayern Munich are on television, and Thomas Müller is one of those.

The 32-year World Cup-winning German has spent his entire career at the club and has been an integral part of the team for the majority of his time since breaking into the starting XI.

Muller spends the majority of his time playing in the hole behind Robert Lewandowski, which allows him to do what he does better than anybody else on the planet – finding pockets of space and linking play.

His movement and spatial awareness are exceptional and get him into great positions to assist his teammates. Alongside his 12 goals for Bayern this season, he’s also had 19 assists.

I’m backing him to get another against this Villarreal side.

Pick: Thomas Müller Over 0.5 assists. (+162 at Bet365)
