New England Revolution vs Toronto FC Picks and Predictions: Shorthanded Visitors in Too Deep

With pressure mounting on head coach Bob Bradley, Toronto FC look to breathe life into their season on Saturday as they visit the New England Revolution.

Toronto FC have just two wins from their last 16 games in all competitions and a 3-0 loss in Cincinnati on Wednesday was another setback for a big-money roster expected to challenge this year.

There are no such problems in New England, with the Revolution sitting in third place in the East and reeling off back-to-back 3-1 wins at Gillette Stadium after an uneven end to May.

New England Revolution vs Toronto FC picks and predictions

For a Toronto FC team without a road win this season, life gets no easier against in-form New England. The Revolution are unbeaten at Gillette Stadium this year (6-0-3) and breezed past Inter Miami and Orlando City in their past two home contests. I expect Saturday’s clash to serve up more one-way traffic, with the visitors short on confidence.

Bob Bradley is on the hot seat after overseeing a 3-10-6 record despite the monster contracts for Lorenzo Insigne and Federico Bernardeschi — and something’s got to give as the club languishes near the foot of the Eastern Conference standings. It feels like changes are imminent in Toronto.

To make matters worse for the Reds, they’ll be without Jonathan Osorio and Richie Laryea on Saturday. Both are on Gold Cup duty with Canada, forcing more reshuffling for a TFC team that already looks lost.

Meanwhile, New England have rediscovered their best form after a mini wobble last month. Veteran Carles Gil, the straw that stirs the drink for the Revolution, has netted in his last two games and the hosts can even afford to leave ex-Juventus striker Giacomo Vrioni in a substitute role, as they did in the win over Orlando City. Bruce Arena’s men have bounced back defensively, too, after allowing nine goals in their last three games on the May slate.

The Revolution are heavy favorites to take the three points so I’m attaching the Over 1.5 prop to juice up the odds. The hosts have scored three goals in three of their last four games, and I see them having the upper hand against a patched-up Toronto backline.

My best bet: Revolution moneyline + Over 1.5 total goals (-110 at bet365)

New England Revolution vs Toronto FC side analysis

The formbook paints this as a mismatch and the MLS odds seem to agree — Toronto is a +400 underdog at some sportsbooks. It’s easy to understand the TFC skepticism given their wretched away form, with the joyless performance in Cincinnati in midweek just adding to their slump.

The Revolution have taken 21 points for a possible 27 at Gillette Stadium, and they handled Insigne and Bernardeschi with ease in a 2-0 victory at BMO Field in early May. The hosts should be well rested too — unlike Toronto, they weren’t in midweek action.

With a long injury list and several Gold Cup absentees, the visitors face an uphill battle and they had to turn to third-choice goalkeeper Greg Ranjitsingh on Wednesday. It’s tough to envision a Toronto turnaround in this spot, though Bradley’s men can take some encouragement from having 64% of the possession in the loss to Eastern Conference-leading FC Cincinnati.

New England Revolution vs Toronto FC Over/Under analysis

While New England have had no trouble creating scoring chances this season (31 goals in 18 league games), it’s been a different story for Toronto FC despite their explosive attacking options.

Remarkably, the Reds have only scored five goals across their last 10 games, and they’ve been shut out six times. The Under on 2.5 total goals has hit in four of the visitors’ last five games, and I’m expecting a defensive-minded game plan from the Reds as they try to turn things around on the road.

That’s enough to make BTTS feel like a risky call, but the Revolution have shown the kind of ruthlessness in the final third lately that suggests they can cash an Over on their own. Forwards Gustavo Bou and Bobby Wood have looked sharp, while Gil continues to shine with seven goals and eight assists this season.

New England Revolution vs Toronto FC weather

It should be dry in Foxborough by kick-off with temperatures in the low 70s, but the forecast calls for rain and thunderstorms during the day so look out for some slippery conditions for the players to navigate.
