The Edmonton Oilers will look to win consecutive games for just the third time all season by topping the Philadelphia Flyers at Xfinity Mobile Arena tonight.

It hasn’t been a storybook start for the Oil, and my Oilers vs. Flyers predictions and NHL picks call for an improved defensive effort from Edmonton, leading the way to a tidy game from No. 1 goalie Stuart Skinner.

Oilers vs Flyers prediction

Oilers vs Flyers Best bet: Under 5.5 (+110)

The Edmonton Oilers have been involved in several high-scoring games lately, and that isn’t the recipe for success for a team missing two key forwards — especially on the highway without the luxury of the last-change advantage.

Offense has also been a shortcoming for the Oil on the road, with a 26th-ranked 2.44 goals per game, and the Philadelphia Flyers have been solid defensively at Xfinity Mobile Arena with the eighth-fewest goals against per game (2.6).

The depleted Edmonton depth chart up front leaves superstars Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl all the more responsible for leading the way offensively, and it gives head coach Kris Knoblauch a tough decision on whether or not to have No. 97 and No. 29 jumping the boards together.

I’m expecting McDavid and Draisaitl to each center a line again tonight, which dilutes the scoring punch for the Oil.

Additionally, it’s notable that Edmonton has scored just 1.6 goals per 60 minutes when neither of their go-to stars is on the ice, and that number drops to just 1.15 at 5-on-5 while also being caved in to the tune of a 45.3 Corsi For percentage.

Again, with added attention to defensive detail a major priority for Edmonton, and McDavid and Draisaitl centering different lines, a low-scoring result is coming in this Wednesday showdown.

Oilers vs Flyers same-game parlay

As noted, the Oilers haven’t been driving possession at 5-on-5, and the Flyers have been on the positive side of the CF% and shot share battles on home ice. There’s no sugarcoating Edmonton goalie Stuart Skinner’s .823 SV% across his past three starts, but his body of work over the last three years slots him into reliable territory, and I’m expecting a bounceback night against Philly.

Turning to Oilers winger Jack Roslovic, he’s been a rare bright star from the Edmonton supporting cast. Roslovic has recorded 2+ shots in each of his past 10 games while logging a solid 18:11 of ice time per night, and he’s now skating on the No. 1 power-play unit, too.
