The Carolina Hurricanes hit the road tonight for a matchup against the Dallas Stars at the American Airlines Center. The NHL odds board has the Stars as slight home favorites in what should be an intense game.

The Canes have won five of their past six games, including two of three since the break, as they continue to threaten the New York Rangers for first place in the Metropolitan Division. They embark on a three-game road trip starting tonight in Dallas.

On the flip side, the Stars are returning home tonight after winning two of three on the road after the break. Dallas has now won five of its last six contests.

Hurricanes vs Stars predictions

The term “potential Stanley Cup Final preview” gets thrown around a lot — probably a bit too much — but it’s usually reserved for some of the flashier teams. However, this is a matchup that should fall into that category as well given how these teams are built.

The Carolina Hurricanes and Dallas Stars both had slow starts to the season before turning it on over the past few months. The Canes are 16-4-4 since December 12 after starting 14-12-1 while the Stars had a better start at 15-8-3 and have improved that over the past two months at 17-6-3 since December 11.

One of the few question marks for the Hurricanes is in between the pipes. Frederik Andersen has been out since November due to blood clot issues, leaving Antti Raanta and Pyotr Kochetkov to tend the goal. The young Russian goalie came up big on Saturday in a 34-save shutout against the Devils.

It was a much-needed effort from Kochetkov, who was pulled from Thursday night’s game after giving up a weak goal. Kochetkov is now 13-8-3 with a 2.50 GAA and .903 SV% on the season and should get the start tonight.

The Stars are coming off a comeback win in Montreal on Saturday night. They have a tough schedule ahead with alternating home and road games this week. It does help they have netminder Jake Oettinger back, though. He is 18-9-2 with a 2.93 GAA and .905 SV% this season.

Both teams are strong in net and have solid defensive structure throughout the lineup. This should be a hard-fought game between two of the best teams in terms of limiting expected goals against this season. The Stars have a league-best 2.23 xGA/60 at 5-on-5 with the Hurricanes just behind them at 2.27 at third in that category, per Natural Stat Trick.

I will gladly take the Under 6.5 here in a game that should probably see the total set at a flat six or even a 5.5.

My best bet: Under 6.5 (-112 at DraftKings)

Hurricanes vs Stars same-game parlay

Hurricanes +1.5

Under 7.5

Martin Necas anytime goalscorer

The Hurricanes are one of the better teams in the league in keeping games close. Three straight meetings between these two teams have gone to overtime with the Canes prevailing in both matchups last season.

The Stars also don’t exactly pull away from teams. They’ve won five of their past six games but all of those victories were by one goal, including two in overtime.

Taking Carolina at +1.5 combined with the Under 7.5 gives us a little bit of wiggle room for another potential 4-3 overtime final, which seems quite possible given these two teams.

We’re also going to take Martin Necas to score a goal. He has seven goals in his last eight games, including a hat trick against the Avalanche last week. He’s one of the Hurricanes’ better offensive threats while playing on the second line.

Hurricanes vs Stars moneyline and Over/Under analysis

Moneyline odds both haven’t moved that much since opening. You can get the Hurricanes at +102 (DraftKings) and Stars at -115 (BetMGM) after opening at +100 and -120, respectively.

The total has remained rather stagnant as well at 6.5. You can get Over 6.5 (-105 via BetMGM) and Under 6.5 (-112 via DraftKings).

I would also take a look at the draw in this game. Both teams tend to go to overtime a bit — Stars 15 times, Hurricanes 11 times — and giving up a point to the other conference isn’t really an issue. You can get the draw on the three-way moneyline at +360 (DraftKings).
