Sartori's selection: Carolina and Washington were among the best defensive teams all season long, and that rang true in Game 1. Much of the same is expected tonight.

The Washington Capitals look to even the series as they host the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 2 of the second round at Capital One Arena.

My Hurricanes vs. Capitals predictions expect another low-scoring affair following Carolina’s 2-1 overtime win in Game 1.

Read on for my NHL picks for Thursday, May 8.

Who will win Hurricanes vs Capitals Game 2?

The Carolina Hurricanes are now 5-1 this postseason and are favored in this matchup. The stronger team is likely to prevail once again, as the Hurricanes outranked the Washington Capitals in expected goals for per 60 minutes (xGF/60), expected goals against per 60 (xGA/60), and expected goals percentage (xGF%) during the regular season.

Hurricanes vs Capitals prediction

My Hurricanes vs Capitals pick: Under 5.5 (-102 at Sports Interaction)

There were just three total goals scored in Game 1, and there is little reason to believe the scoring will increase dramatically in Game 2. First, both goaltenders have played exceptionally well.

Frederik Andersen is in net for Carolina. He has allowed one or fewer goals in four of his five starts this postseason, posting a 4-1 record with a .935 save percentage and 1.45 goals-against average.

Andersen benefits from playing behind one of the league’s top defensive units, led by Jaccob Slavin. In both the regular season and playoffs, the Hurricanes rank in the top half of the league in xGA/60.

Meanwhile, Logan Thompson starts across the ice for Washington. He’s been equally impressive in these playoffs, producing a 4-2 record with a .926 save percentage and 2.17 goals-against average through six starts.

Finally, five or fewer total goals have been scored in four of each team’s six playoff games.

Hurricanes vs Capitals same-game parlay (SGP)

Under 5.5

Sebastian Aho 2+ shots

Andrei Svechnikov 2+ shots

While we’re backing a low-scoring game, we can still expect volume from some Carolina skaters. Two strong candidates are Sebastian Aho and Andrei Svechnikov, both of whom skate on the Hurricanes’ top line.

Carolina dominated possession in Game 1, outshooting Washington 33-14. Aho and Svechnikov each recorded at least three shots on goal, part of a consistent trend this postseason.

Both skaters have recorded at least two shots in three of the past four games.
