If the Seattle Seahawks are going to put together a deep playoff run, it starts with their smothering defense – and that unit has Kirk Cousins and the Atlanta Falcons in its sights on Sunday.

While Seattle moved to 9-3 with a shutout Week 13 victory, Atlanta is in also-ran territory now. My early Seahawks vs. Falcons predictions signal one-way traffic this weekend at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

Early Seahawks vs Falcons spread pick: Seahawks -8.5

These teams are heading in opposite directions as we enter the last month of the regular season. The Seattle Seahawks still have a shot at the No. 1 seed in the NFC, while the Atlanta Falcons are 1-6 SU in their past seven contests.

After Seattle grabbed four interceptions in Sunday’s 26-0 win over the Minnesota Vikings and improved to 9-3 ATS this year, I’m willing to lay the points with the visitors in this spot.

Mike Macdonald’s squad is 5-1 on the road, and there’s just not enough threat here from an Atlanta team that’s coming off a loss to the New York Jets. The Falcons have dropped their last two outings at home, including a 34-10 setback against the Miami Dolphins.

The Seahawks have won three of previous four meetings between these teams, and they cruised to a 34-14 victory at Mercedes-Benz Stadium last October. We could see a similar scoreline here, especially if Seattle hits top gear with the Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba connection.

That said, the hosts’ biggest flaw is their run defense, which allows 131.2 yards per game, so the Seahawks may be content to use their big personnel and count on Kenneth Walker III and Zach Charbonnet to move the chains.

Early Seahawks vs Falcons total pick: Over 43.5

As impressive as Seattle looked defensively on Sunday in making it a nightmare debut from Minnesota’s Max Brosmer, I’m picking the Over here. That’s been a winning ticket in seven of the last 10 battles between these squads, and the Seahawks are averaging 29.2 PPG this season.

The Over is also 4-1 in the Falcons’ past five outings, with their defense giving up 27+ points in three of the last four games, and three of their prior four home games have delivered 44+ total points.

Even if Drake London remains out with a knee injury, Atlanta can still lean on Bijan Robinson, Kyle Pitts, and Darnell Mooney to make key plays, and Cousins held up well against the Jets on the way to 234 passing yards and no turnovers.

Meanwhile, Seattle still hasn’t fully unleashed Rashid Shaheed, who knows the Falcons very well from his New Orleans Saints days, and AJ Barner is emerging as a reliable contributor at tight end.

With both teams ranking in the top half of the league in yards per play, I see enough scoring opportunities to nail the Over.
