The NFL regular season comes to a close in style Sunday night. The Baltimore Ravens take on the Pittsburgh Steelers with the AFC North title and subsequent postseason position on the line.
While Pittsburgh has home-field advantage for this “win and in” showdown, its offense is missing a few key weapons. That makes dual-threat running back Kenneth Gainwell that much more important.
Gainwell's work as a receiver is where you’ll find my best Ravens vs. Steelers predictions and NFL picks for January 4.
Ravens vs Steelers prediction
Ravens vs Steelers best bet: Kenneth Gainwell Over 29.5 receiving yards (-114)
Kenneth Gainwell has become a big part of the Pittsburgh Steelers’ passing attack in the second half of the season.
He’s drawn six or more targets in five of the past seven games, while reeling in at least five receptions in five of those outings. Gainwell has posted receiving efforts of 30-plus yards in four of those contests.
He caught six of seven balls his way against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 14, managing 27 yards receiving in that 27-22 victory in Baltimore. And now, in this return meeting with the old division rival, Gainwell sees his spot in the receiving pecking order climbing.
Pittsburgh enters Week 18 missing star WR D.K. Metcalf (suspended) and big-bodied TE Darnell Washington (broken arm), and could also have a limited WR Calvin Austin, who is nursing a hamstring ailment.
That’s three of the Steelers’ top five receiving threats.
Gainwell, who leads the team in receptions and is third in receiving yards, will play an even bigger role as a receiver, given the state of the injury report as well as a game script that has Pittsburgh +3.5 playing from behind — prompting more dropbacks from Aaron Rodgers.
Add in the fact that the Ravens’ defense has allowed the fourth most receiving yards to running backs, and many Week 18 projections calling for 30-plus receiving yards from Gainwell — with a ceiling of 41.5 — and I like him to go Over his receiving prop for the eighth time in the last 10 games.
