Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko is an excellent defensive mind, unquestionably one of the best in the sport.
However, his second year at College Station appears to feature a disappointing defensive line, relatively speaking. That is not entirely on Elko.
Rebuilding either line in just two winters is a difficult task, particularly when trying to rebuild them to the levels expected by A&M boosters.
That defensive front allowed enough relative rushing success to both UTSA and Utah State to believe Notre Dame would lean on its ground game, something that was expected in the Irish season opener at Miami but never realized. In retrospect, perhaps credit should be given to the Hurricanes’ defensive front.
If Texas A&M is indeed susceptible against the rush, no one on Notre Dame’s roster will exploit that better than Jeremiyah Love.
And leaning on Love should slow down the game, particularly early. With any cushion whatsoever, the Irish can then lean on their defense.
It held Miami’s explosive offense in far better check than has been remembered two weeks later. Frankly, holding the Hurricanes to only 27 points — including seven off an absurd catch that 999 times out of 1,000 would have been an interception — may look more impressive as the season progresses.
