It is not quite a College Football Playoff elimination game, but the loser of this matchup between the No. 8 Mississippi Rebels and the No. 13 Oklahoma Sooners will have a perilous tightrope to walk the rest of the season.

Each at 6-1, the Rebels and the Sooners both know a 9-3 finish is likely a disqualifier.

My Mississippi vs. Oklahoma predictions trust the home favorite with the better defense. Kickoff comes at 12 ET on Saturday, October 25.

Our best Mississippi vs Oklahoma SGP for Week 9

Oklahoma is the better team. Oklahoma is at home. Oklahoma has the more dominant defensive front. And Oklahoma has the better quarterback.

Trusting the Sooners to cover this modest spread makes sense when not overthinking it, but even when overthinking it, realize that Mississippi’s defense is wildly susceptible to designed quarterback rushes.

The Rebels rank No. 85 in how often quarterbacks run by design and No. 99 in slowing the damage done by those rushes, per CFB-graphs.com. Against John Mateer, that is all nothing but a recipe for a disaster.

To make that matter worse, Mississippi’s defense ranks No. 125 in the country in damage done by racking up sacks. In other words, even when the Rebels may fluster Mateer, he is likely to escape and escape productively.

On the other side of the ball, the Sooners’ defense ranks No. 13 in the country in damage done via sacks. Snag a few of those and Rebels’ quarterback Trinidad Chambliss’ effectiveness will plummet.

Note if there is an applicable parlay boost available.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
