The Western Michigan Broncos are short favorites to win their first MAC Championship title since 2016 when they host the Miami (OH) RedHawks at Ford Field.

This championship bout is ultimately about the quarterbacks, and my Miami (OH) vs. Western Michigan predictions expect Broc Lowry and Western Michigan to cover as the short favorite.

Read on for my college football picks for Saturday, December 6.

Miami (OH) vs Western Michigan predictions for the MAC Championship

Who will win the MAC Championship?

Western Michigan may have been fortunate to reach this spot, but the combination of Broc Lowry’s dynamic rushing ability and the Broncos’ elite red-zone defense gives them a real edge over freshman quarterback Thomas Gotkowski and the Miami RedHawks.

Miami (OH) vs Western Michigan best bet: Western Michigan -1.5 (-114)

The Western Michigan Broncos don’t always rely on a polished passing attack. Instead, they typically win with physicality, time of possession, and quarterback Broc Lowry’s dual-threat capabilities.

That matters against a Miami (OH) RedHawks defense that has quietly allowed 23 touchdowns on 34 red-zone trips, including 15 passing touchdowns.

Lowry’s 14 rushing scores aren’t a stat-padding novelty, they are a direct mismatch against a RedHawks front seven that can bend between the 20s and break inside the 10-yard line.

Western Michigan’s defense is elite in the red zone. It ranks in the Top 20 nationally in yards allowed, creating a scenario in which RedHawks freshman quarterback Thomas Gotkowski will likely settle for more field goals than touchdowns while WMU and Lowry finish drives.

Add in WMU’s four extra days of rest, a massive time-of-possession edge, and run-first identity, and all signs point to a Broncos win.

Miami (OH) vs Western Michigan same-game parlay

Lowry is the Broncos' catalyst, and he’s scampered for at least one touchdown in eight of his previous nine games.

After a November of horrible MACtion weather, both quarterbacks should be thrilled to be indoors at Ford Field. Both teams match up in ways that should create scoring.

Western Michigan’s run-heavy red-zone attack faces a Miami defense that’s allowed 15 TDs in 30 trips, while Miami’s explosive passing game should improve indoors at Ford Field.

We’ve seen three of their previous five meetings go Over the total, and Saturday’s MAC Championship game should be a high-scoring affair.

Miami (OH) vs Western Michigan SGP

  • Western Michigan -1.5
  • Broc Lowry anytime TD
  • Over 43.5

Our deep-ball SGP: Gotkowski gets involved

Western Michigan’s recent run-heavy approach was driven by harsh November weather, not offensive limitations. Lowry has topped 114 passing yards in seven games this season and now faces a Miami defense giving up 206 yards per game and over 11 yards per completion.

Gotkowski is a capable runner, and against an aggressive Western Michigan front seven, he’s likely to call his own number more often. He’s already scored once on the ground this season and now faces a WMU defense that has surrendered 13 rushing touchdowns inside the red zone.
