It’s an interesting chapter in the rivalry matchup between LSU and Alabama.
The Tigers come into this matchup with an interim head coach and will look to play spoilers to the Tide’s quest for the college football playoff.

LSU vs Alabama predictions
Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.
Early LSU vs Alabama spread pick: LSU +10.5
I don’t feel great about this, but if LSU is going to “play up” in any spot, it’s going to be here.
After the firing of Brian Kelly, and virtually no hope of making the College Football Playoff left, it’s looking like mostly a lost season for the Tigers. But having the chance to spoil the playoff hopes of one of your rivals? That will perk up your ears.
Of course, that situational aspect is built into the line to a degree, but I don’t think it’s enough. I’ll discuss this further in my total play, but the path to scoring in this game is a challenging one. That makes any double-digit number appealing.
LSU has seen enough talented quarterbacks this season to add validity to its above-average numbers in pass success rate allowed, yards per dropback allowed, etc.
That makes me believe the Tigers can slow this Alabama passing attack, and when you can do that, you stand a pretty good chance of hanging with the Tide.
I projected this spread at 10, so there’s not much wiggle room on the side, but it’s the direction I’m leaning.
Early LSU vs Alabama total pick: Under 49.5
I feel good about this one. It’s pretty easily my strongest side of the two, with a projected total of 44.5. The most direct reason: Both of these teams play into the strength of the other's defense.
It’s still hard for me to get used to saying this, but if Alabama has its choice, it wants to air the ball out when it’s logical to do so.
It’s the DNA of its coaching staff, and to be fair, it’s had every reason to throw the ball this season, with the passing game being highly efficient.
The Tide ranks in the Top 10 in EPA per drop back, passing success rate, and EPA per game when passing. This isn’t a surprise when you see the season that Ty Simpson has had.
Unfortunately for the Tide, this will play directly into the strength of the LSU defense. It’s a group that has been very strong this season against the pass, ranking in the Top 50 nationally across most metrics.
The other side of the ball is pretty much a two-sided coin. The LSU offense has been a disappointment all season long, and, like its opponent, the strength of the Tigers' offense is also the strength of the Bama defense.
The most direct route to beating Alabama is through the ground, which it has shown all season. LSU hasn’t shown the capacity to do that this season, with Caden Durham, Harlem Barry, and Ju’Juan Johnson all being held to relatively average yards per carry.
