The Georgia Bulldogs and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets played arguably the best game in college football last season, with the Dawgs surviving a 44-42 eight-overtime epic.

So, what do these in-state rivals have in store for an encore? The Bulldogs are in wait-and-see mode for the SEC Championship Game, while maybe the only thing that can save the Yellow Jackets' season is a resume-building upset.

My Georgia vs. Georgia Tech predictions and college football picks break down why this year’s matchup is more than a rivalry game and why we should see the Yellow Jackets' best effort.

Georgia vs Georgia Tech prediction

Georgia vs Georgia Tech best bet: Georgia Tech team total Over 22.5 (-120)

Haynes King and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets came oh-so-close to pulling off the upset of the year last season, eventually falling 44-42 to the rival Georgia Bulldogs in an eight-overtime thriller. Despite the loss, it sure felt like Georgia Tech carried the momentum from that game into this season, starting the year 8-0.

However, the wheels have quickly fallen off, with the Yellow Jackets losing two of their last three games. Now, they technically aren’t eliminated from the ACC title race; they’ll just need a lot of things to go their way.

Georgia, on the other hand, enters this game with one loss on the year (to Alabama), and their path to the SEC Championship Game is far more straightforward. A Crimson Tide or Texas A&M Aggies loss this weekend gets them in.

So, really, this game means two things: bragging rights. It's an impressive win to put on the resume just before the College Football Playoff committee decides on the playoff field.

As I said, Georgia Tech needs a lot of things to fall its way this weekend, and a huge win over Georgia sure wouldn’t hurt its cause. Can the Yellow Jackets pull that off with the current state of their defense? I’m not sure.

One thing I am sure of is that King will give it his all. With him under center, the Yellow Jackets have one of the best offenses in the country. They enter this game ranked ninth in success rate and 24th in EPA per play.

The dual-threat King should rely more on his arm against a Georgia defense that's solid but not like years past. The Bulldogs can be attacked through the air, ranking 55th in success rate on dropbacks. That should, in turn, open things up for the Georgia Tech running game.

Georgia Tech may not win this game, but King & Co. will put up a fight and cash the Over on their team total.

Georgia vs Georgia Tech same-game parlay

Georgia Tech is at its best when Haynes King is rumbling. That will be made easier if King can move the ball through the air against this Georgia defense. That should then open up some running lanes for him as well.

His rushing prop is a modest 66.5 against a solid Georgia run defense, but he’s easily eclipsed this number in seven of his 10 games played this season, and he ran for 110 yards against the Dawgs in last season’s epic battle.

Meanwhile, Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton has thrown 19 touchdown passes this season, and Georgia Tech ranks 103rd in the country in success rate on dropbacks.

One of his favorite targets lately has been wideout Noah Thomas. The deep threat has found the end zone four times in the last four games. Take Thomas to score again on Friday night.
