Although the Big Ten is home to three of the biggest title contenders, including the defending champions, two teams are flying under the radar as programs that will potentially exceed expectations.

The Big Ten has taken home three straight CFP National Championship titles and is again loaded with programs that have some of the highest win totals in the country (Oregon, Indiana, Ohio State).

However, my favorite 2026 Big Ten win total predictions and college football picks target a team that annually exceeds expectations under its future Hall of Fame coach and one that brings back more production than any other program in the conference.

Favorite Big Ten Over win total bets

Iowa Over 7.5 wins (-132)

For nearly three decades, Kirk Ferentz has had Iowa among the fiercest teams in the Big Ten, even when the offense was borderline non-existent. He's won eight or more regular-season games 14 times during his tenure and has shown no signs of slowing down, hitting Over 7.5 wins in eight of the last 11 years.

The offense has improved since Ferentz moved on from his son, Brian, and hired Tim Lester in 2024. And while Lester has to break in a new starting QB (likely Jeremy Hecklinski), he brings back two All-American offensive linemen, Trevor Lauck and Kade Pieper.

Those two should once again pave the way for a run-first offense that's deep at running back with Kamari Moulton and transfer LJ Phillips Jr. (South Dakota).

But the real star might be wide receiver Tony Diaz, a UT Rio Grande Valley transfer with a dynamic skill set that could open up the offense.

While the defense is dealing with personnel turnover, it should once again be among the best in the country under long-time coordinator Phil Parker.

Led by star do-it-all defensive back Zach Lutmer, the secondary is the strength and adds a sneaky big transfer in safety Tyler Brown (James Madison).

Iowa also has a manageable schedule, opening with three non-conference home games where the Hawkeyes should be major favorites, and playing six teams with a win total of 6.5 or lower over its final six games. Brad Powers' Big Ten preview projects Iowa to win 7.9 games.

Maryland Over 5.5 wins (+118)

Granted, Maryland suffered a major blow when it was announced that Zahir Mathis will miss the season with a lower-body injury, but Mike Locksley is still in position to save his job and take the Terrapins bowling.

Before Mathis' injury, Maryland ranked No. 2 in the nation in returning production (71%), with the bulk of its best players being freshmen and sophomores last season.

That includes starting QB Malik Washington, who showed NFL potential as a 19-year-old true freshman last season.

Washington's stats might not jump out, but he also didn't have much help last year, leading the country in EPA lost to drops (-86.5). Locksley addressed the issue in the portal by adding Na'eem Abdul-Rahim Gladding (Old Dominion) and Chris Durr Jr. (Wyoming).

The Terps are deep in the trenches on both sides of the ball, too, and five-star freshman Zion Elee should help make up for the loss of Mathis.

With Elee stepping in, Maryland's defense looks scary on paper, bringing back all-conference talent at every level in Sidney Stewart, Daniel Wingate, and Dontay Joyner.

Nearly as important as the returning production, though, is the schedule. Maryland's SOS is the second-lowest in the Big Ten and 114th nationally (.477) - it avoids Indiana, Oregon, Michigan, Iowa, and Washington.

Favorite Big Ten Under win total bets

Michigan State Under 3.5 wins (+140)

Michigan State's downfall post-Mark Dantonio has been something. Under Dantonio, the Spartans missed one bowl game in 13 seasons. Since he retired in 2019, they have had one winning season and are on their third head coach.

Going from Jonathan Smith to Pat Fitzgerald was one of the least inspiring coaching moves of the offseason, and the man who made that move — athletic director J Batt — left in June for the same job at Kentucky.

A lack of alignment in the athletic department, a retread head coach who went 4-20 in his last two seasons coaching at Northwestern, a roster that's 97th in returning production (46%), and a schedule that's 28th in SOS (.575) is a recipe for disaster in East Lansing.

Unless UConn transfers Cam Edwards and Ben Murawski turn the Spartans into a top rushing attack and linebacker Jordan Hall turns around this transfer-heavy defense, Fitzgerald should win fewer than four games for the fourth time in his last five seasons as a head coach.

Purdue Under 3.5 wins (-139)

Since 2013, Purdue has won four or more games just six times, and five of those were under Jeff Brohm. In the four seasons before hiring Brohm, Purdue was 9-39, never winning more than three games. In the three seasons since Brohm left for Louisville, the Boilermakers are 7-29.

Barry Odom is in an impossible situation trying to turn Purdue around. The Boilermakers went 2-10 in his first season with a lineup that was pretty much entirely made up of transfers, after going 1-11 in 2024 and firing Ryan Walters.

Not much will change this year, with Ryan Browne under center as QB1 again, a season after he had nearly double the number of turnover-worthy plays (17) than he did TD passes (9).

While Odom added transfers at the skill positions and on the O-line, none of the additions move the needle much for an offense that was one of the worst in the Power 4 last season. The defense is slightly better, but not by enough to make much of a difference, unless some of the transfers play at an All-Big Ten level.

And Purdue's schedule is one of the toughest in the conference, ranking 19th nationally in SOS (59.1%).
