With major coaching changes and transfer portal exits, the door is open in the Sun Belt for two former powers to rise, while a pair of teams with retread head coaches could be in for long seasons full of losses.

With the James Madison team that won the conference and reached the College Football Playoff last season losing all of its key pieces, the Sun Belt is wide open in 2026, and two teams that have recently taken home the conference crown are in the best position to take advantage.

Both Louisiana and Marshall return their head coaches and dynamic QBs, making them the two teams I'm buying stock in most with my 2026 Sun Belt win total predictions, while a pair of directional schools with uninspiring head coaches look directionless this season.

Louisiana Over 7.5 wins (+105)

Between the time Billy Napier left the Sun Belt for Florida and returned to it to take over James Madison this season, Michael Desormeaux has led Louisiana to four straight bowl games.

However, he's won at least eight games just once during his four seasons as head coach.

But this is set up to be one of his best teams since taking over the program, thanks to what the Ragin' Cajuns bring back on offense. Louisiana is 31st nationally in returning production, which includes both QB Lunch Winfield and wide receiver Shelton Sampson Jr.

Winfield didn't take over as the starting QB until partway through the season, and once the then-sophomore was acclimated, he became one of the best dual-threats in the Group of 6.

With Winfield behind center, Louisiana won four straight games to close the regular season (averaging 34.4 points per game during the win streak) and reach bowl eligibility.

Although the defense doesn't bring back quite as much, it has arguably the best defensive back in the conference in Brent Gordon Jr. and should have one of the better secondaries.

The biggest reason, though, to get on board with the Ragin' Cajuns is their schedule. Louisiana's SOS is ranked 135th (.434), with it avoiding James Madison, Marshall, and Old Dominion while including three layup non-conference games (Lamar, UAB, Charlotte).

Marshall Over 7.5 wins (+105)

Two seasons ago, Marshall won the Sun Belt and then opted to let Charles Huff walk. Huff took basically every relevant eligible player with him to Southern Miss, and the Thundering Herd's Tony Gibson had to rebuild the program from scratch.

Though Marshall missed a bowl last year, winning five games was a feat in itself for Gibson, who should have a way easier time this season.

The Thundering Herd are 44th in returning offensive production (61%), led by the preseason Sun Belt Player of the Year, QB Carlos Del Rio-Wilson.

Del Rio-Wilson gives Marshall a true X-factor with his dual-threat ability. He had one of the lowest turnover-worthy play rates in the G6 (2.5%) and was seventh nationally among QBs in forced missed tackles on runs (41).

Gibson bolstered the talent around him, too, with a few Power 4 transfers, and the defense should improve with Brad Lambert taking over as coordinator and players like Javae Gilmore, Daytione Smith, and Braydin Ward back.

Like Louisiana, Marshall also has three non-conference games they should be favored in by several points (Middle Tennessee, Missouri State, Gardner-Webb), and it closes the season with three straight home games against teams not expected to reach bowl games.

Favorite Sun Belt Under win total bets

South Alabama Under 5.5 wins (+100)

Outside of Kane Wommack, who left the job to be defensive coordinator at Alabama, nobody wins consistently at South Alabama.

In the school's 14 seasons as an FBS program, it's reached five bowl games: two when the Sun Belt was arguably the worst G6 conference, two in Wommack's three seasons, and one two years ago in Major Applewhite's first season.

It's fair to argue Applewhite went bowling because of Wommack's work building the program. And it's fair to say last year's 4-8 campaign was a real peek at what the Applewhite era will look like in Mobile.

The Jaguars are in for an ugly year for several reasons. First, they're just 105th in returning production (44%), and Applewhite didn't bring in much of a transfer portal class to offset that... South Alabama has the 135th-ranked portal class.

Second, the schedule isn't forgiving, with three difficult non-conference games (Tulane, Ohio, Kentucky) and games against Marshall, Louisiana, and Troy. So even with a promising QB in Bishop Davenport, there isn't much room for error.

Southern Miss Under 3.5 wins (+100)

Southern Miss has been through one hell of a time. After going 4-20 in 2023 and 2024, the Golden Eagles took advantage of Marshall's unwillingness to bring back Huff as head coach and brought him to Hattiesburg, along with several of the Thundering Herd's best players.

Now, Southern Miss has to try to recover from Huff leaving for Memphis and taking the bulk of its best players with him. The Golden Eagles are last (138th) in the country in returning production (22%), and naming Blake Anderson as head coach, who was the interim for last year's bowl game, was among the worst coaching hires in the country.

Anderson takes over a roster with limited FBS starting experience that has to play one of the toughest schedules in the conference. Southern Miss has the 37th-toughest schedule in the country based on SOS (.568), and Brad Powers has tabbed them as one of the least improved teams in college football.

Given the shape Southern Miss was in before Huff, and the shape he left them in, it's hard to imagine Anderson lifting this program to four wins.

The Golden Eagles have won fewer than four games in seven of the last 14 years.
