Auburn vs Texas A&M Predictions - Early Picks & Odds for Week 5

While we like Texas A&M at -6.5, the Under 52.5 is where the best value lies with Auburn traveling to Kyle Field.

The Auburn Tigers hope to avoid back-to-back losses when they visit the Texas A&M Aggies on Saturday, September 27. Meanwhile, the Aggies will look to build on a strong College Football Playoff resume and stay undefeated.

My early Texas A&M vs. Auburn predictions and college football picks are siding with the Aggies against the spread at Kyle Field, where the Under should also be in play.

Auburn vs Texas A&M predictions

Here are our early thoughts on the spread and total for this week’s game. We will have a full game preview (with a best bet and SGP) later in the week.

Early Auburn vs Texas A&M spread pick: Texas A&M -6.5

After opening at 7.5, this has been bet down to less than a touchdown and into a comfortable range where backing Texas A&M is the right side. In the most general sense, I am an Aggies believer. Beyond that, though, my "fair line" was the original 7.5-point spread, so I’m comfortable fading the line movement.

A&M has multiple edges in this matchup that exist simply because they have proven to be the more dynamic offense.

I would consider myself a fan of QB Marcel Reed entering the season, and so far, he’s made me look good. Through a schedule that has already included a win over Notre Dame, Reed has posted the 34th-best EPA per pass rating this season.

That’s the story in this matchup. The Auburn secondary has not been good, ranking in the mid-100s in EPA per pass allowed, and Oklahoma QB John Mateer just torched them for nearly 300 yards. The Aggies can replicate that.

Oh, and the Aggies would have also noted the nine (9!) sacks that Oklahoma got on Auburn last week. Texas A&M has the horses to present similar issues.

Early Auburn vs Texas A&M total pick: Under 52.5

I like this side even better, with a significant difference between my projected total and the one we have here. I made this number an even 49, so the Under was one of the first bets I made this week.

Auburn will unlikely have much success through the air, aligning with what we’ve seen from them this season, the strength of the A&M defense, and who QB Jackson Arnold has been throughout his career (a guy who hurts you with his arm and checkdowns that are extensions of the rushing game).

Because of this, I expect a lot of running from the Tigers, with drives that bleed the clock. That will work, at least somewhat, but the national rating of 95th in EPA per play will show up as some of their drives fail to cash in.

On the other side, Auburn’s defense owns the No. 1 rush success rate nationally and forces opponents into longer third downs, which can slow scoring despite Texas A&M’s passing edge. Even though I suspect the Aggies will mostly control this contest, trench guys like Keyron Crawford will make plays for the Tigers and keep the scoring relatively in check.
