Early Alabama vs Kentucky spread pick: Kentucky +10.5
I’m high on Kentucky’s quarterback and coach combo.
Wildcats first-year senior QB Kenny Minchey transferred from Notre Dame after losing the starting quarterback battle to Fighting Irish QB C.J. Carr, who is one of the favorites in the Heisman Trophy odds. Minchey was a four-star recruit out of high school and the No. 17-ranked quarterback in the class of 2023, so he has talent.
Stein is 36 years old and the second-youngest coach of a Power 4 school. Oregon had one of the best offenses in the country with Stein as their offensive coordinator from 2023-25. He poached a lot of talent from other schools, as Kentucky's transfer portal class ranked 10th nationally.
Since hiring head coach Kalen DeBoer in 2024, Alabama is 3-5-1 against the spread (ATS) as a road favorite with a -6.9 spread differential.
Because the Crimson Tide ranks 119th in returning offensive production this season, per college football analyst Bill Connelly, I’m not convinced it can win by margin on the road vs. a conference opponent.

Early Alabama vs Kentucky total pick: Under 49.5
Even though I like Minchey and Stein, Kentucky ranks 112th in returning offensive production, so they may struggle early in conference play. Both teams have first-year starting quarterbacks, so we could see them "establish the run" this weekend.
Alabama is 6-12 Over/Under (O/U) in SEC games in the DeBoer era with a -3.6 O/U margin. Connelly's model is showing more value on the Under with his projected score being Alabama 28, Kentucky 19. That said, I much prefer the Wildcats ATS more than the Under.
