Against the spread (ATS) pick
There aren’t many teams in the nation that struggle to score the way that DePaul does. The Blue Demons are 253rd in the country in adjusted offensive efficiency (all efficiency stats according to KenPom.com), which is really quite amazing, when you consider that these rankings account for a ton of small programs. Now, DePaul faces a Providence team that is rather solid on the defensive end. The Friars aren’t anything special defensively, but they are 64th in the nation and that should be more than enough to slow down an already lousy offense.
Meanwhile, DePaul’s 43rd-ranked adjusted defense is going to have to be nearly flawless in order for the Blue Demons to have a shot. However, that’s going to be difficult against this Friars team, as David Duke is a fantastic shot creator for Providence. On the year, Duke is averaging 17.2 points, 6.4 rebounds, 4.8 assists and 1.2 steals per game for the Friars. He’s a 40.2 percent three-point shooter, and he knows how to get himself some good looks in the mid-range. Duke is coming off a 20-point performance against Villanova on Saturday and he should be able to turn in a similar outing here.
For what it’s worth, Providence is also 11-3 ATS when coming off an upset win as a home underdog under head coach Ed Cooley.
PREDICTION: Providence -6.5 (-110)
Over/Under Pick
DePaul and Providence most recently met on February 13, when the Friars came away with a 57-47 victory. That game was extremely ugly, with the teams combining to score 104 points. This one likely won’t be quite as bad, but it’s still hard to imagine these teams running up the score. As previously mentioned, the Blue Demons are a disaster on offense. And Providence, while much better than DePaul, isn’t great on that end of the floor either. This game likely ends with the winning team somewhere in the 60s.
PREDICTION: Under 133.0 (-110)
