Dartmouth vs Duke Odds, Picks and Predictions: Blue Devils Will Win But By How Much?

Duke enters 2023-24 with a chip on its shoulder after a deflating March Madness exit at the hands of Tennessee. But with a massive 26.5-point spread, the Blue Devils may struggle to blow out the Dartmouth Big Green, per our betting picks.

The Duke Blue Devils enter the year with short college basketball odds to win the National Championship and begin their pursuit on Monday when they welcome the Dartmouth Big Green to Cameron Indoor Stadium.

The Blue Devils are coming off a third-place finish in the ACC but suffered a second-round defeat to Tennessee. Dartmouth finished sixth in the Ivy League standings and is hoping to make its first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1959.

Here, I take a closer look at the odds with my free college basketball picks as I preview Dartmouth vs. Duke on Monday, November 6.

Dartmouth vs Duke picks and predictions

Before the NIL era, Duke would be introducing a new starting five while replacing a few key bench players. That isn’t the case this season, as the Blue Devils return four starters plus two key reserves.

The Dukies enjoyed an excellent recruiting season with a couple of freshmen sure to have an immediate impact, and together with the returning upperclassmen, they have the makings of a team that could win a Natty.

Duke returns their three best offensive threats from last season. Kyle Filipowski could’ve gone to the NBA but decided to return for his sophomore season. He led the Blue Devils in scoring and rebounding and will be a big task for the Big Green to keep in check, as will guards Jeremy Roach and Tyrese Proctor. The two guards shot over 30% from beyond the arc, with each averaging three assists for the Dukies last season.

Add in sophomore forward Mark Mitchell alongside freshmen Jared McCain and Caleb Foster, and the only real question is what the Blue Devils' winning margin will be on Monday.

Dartmouth has four starters returning from a group that finished its season with an 8-16 mark. Leading scorer Dame Adelekun transferred to Loyola Chicago, but forwards Ryan Cornish and Dusan Neskovic were double-digit scorers last season, and Brandon Mitchell-Day is expected to grab the lion's share of the rebounds. Guard Jaren Johnson also returns and will be the Big Green's main ball distributor, and they have an experienced bench.

A spread of 26.5 points is quite a bit for a team that went 16-20 ATS last season. Sure, the Blue Devils enjoy a considerable size advantage, and the squad is filled with potential NBA talent, but that’s too many points on opening night. Dartmouth will likely finish toward the bottom of the Ivy League table but is still an experienced group with four starters returning and a deep, experienced bench that didn’t win many games last season but was 12-13-1 ATS.

Finally, this is opening night and all the pressure is on Duke. Blue Devils faithful are used to winning conference championships and making deep March Madness runs under retired head coach Mike Krzyzewski. Instead, they got bounced in the second round of the Big Dance last year, and the fans weren’t happy. Duke should easily win this game, but Dartmouth won’t back down, and it will fight for each of the 48 minutes and cover the +26.5 spread.

My best bet: Dartmouth +26.5 (-110 at BetMGM)

Dartmouth vs Duke same-game parlay

Dartmouth +26.5

Under 140.5

Monday’s matchup might be closer than what the public expects. Dartmouth covers spreads and with the returning experience, the Big Green should be able to hang around long enough to do just that.

Both squads have some experience sitting on the pine, and non-conference contests are great for both coaches to get their players some playing time. We should expect to see plenty of substitutions on Monday night, and that could affect the game script in a negative way. We’ll see some great scoring runs followed by periods with bricks, bad shots, and turnovers. Look for the jitters early, and this game ends Under the total.

Dartmouth vs Duke spread and Over/Under analysis

I couldn’t find a moneyline play for this game anywhere, and I highly doubt that market will be on the board for this contest. Maybe something will pop on the screen during the game, but I’m sure the juice would be astronomical.

BetMGM opened this game Duke -23.5 (-110) and, of course, the public pounded that number to its present 26.5 points. PointsBet has Duke -24 (-110), and that’s the lowest number available for the spread on Sunday night. Hopefully, the number dips at the other books, and we end up with some excellent CLV to accompany our +26.5 wager at BetMGM.

The total opened at 140.5 (-110), which hasn’t budged. Surprisingly, the total didn’t move after a 3.0-point spread shift. BetRivers did have 141 points, but it dipped to 140.5 while I was writing.
