Hornets vs Clippers Picks and Predictions: Charlotte's Leaky D Helps LA Find Offense

The Clippers don't normally score a ton of points... but they face a Hornets defense that has provided very little resistance so far this season. Our NBA betting preview not only likes the Clips to cover — but we're also expecting a higher-scoring affair.

The Los Angeles Clippers have won three games in a row, the last two by a combined 31 points. Now, the Clippers will look to make it four in a row against a Charlotte Hornets team that stumbles in having lost three in a row.

Tonight’s NBA betting odds have Charlotte as a 5.5-point underdog — can LaMelo Ball help his team stop the skid at STAPLES Center? Keep reading our Hornets vs. Clippers picks and predictions for Sunday, November 7, to get a better read on this game.

Hornets vs Clippers picks and predictions

Our predictions are compiled from the analysis of the spread and total and are indications of where we are leaning for this game.
Our best bet is the play that we like the most for this game, which we would actually put some of our bankroll behind.

The Clippers are really playing some great basketball coming into this game, and they now catch an ice-cold Hornets squad. On the season, Los Angeles is third in the league in defensive rating — which is crazy considering the team is without Kawhi Leonard — and the group now gets Serge Ibaka back. This defense could go to a whole other level if Ibaka is even half the player that he once was.

Charlotte is really in a bad way coming into this one. After starting the season 3-0 and then 5-2, the Hornets are now back at .500 and currently have the worst defensive rating in basketball. That’s extremely significant when looking at a game like this one. If Los Angeles is weak anywhere, it’s on the offensive end. The Clippers are just 22nd in the league in offensive rating and the team relies heavily on Paul George for production.

However, they are more than capable of getting good shots up against a very bad defense, and they should have no trouble carving up the Hornets here.

Considering how bad Charlotte is defensively, don’t be surprised if this ends up being a game in which Reggie Jackson and Luke Kennard make big impacts for Los Angeles. Both of them can be lethal shooters and are facing a defense that will give them the opportunity to get some great looks.

Prediction: Clippers -5.5 (-110)

While the Clippers are capable of playing stifling defense, it’s not realistic to expect them to completely shut down a Hornets team that is averaging 114.2 points per game this year. That’s the highest number in the league, and Charlotte has even topped 110 points in two of its last three losses. If the Hornets score at least 110 points in this game, the Over would be in good shape.

The Over is 7-3 in Charlotte’s 10 games this season, and it’s also 29-15 in Charlotte road games with a total of 220 to 229.5 under head coach James Borrego. On top of that, the Over is also 5-2 when Los Angeles is coming off a game in which it gave up 90 or fewer points under head coach Tyronn Lue.

Prediction: Over 224.0 (-110)

As mentioned earlier, this is a matchup that should really suit Kennard well. He is taking 6.0 threes per game after attempting only 3.6 with the Clippers a year ago. He’s hunting his own shot with regularity, and this is a matchup in which his aggressiveness should ultimately be rewarded.

Only three teams in the NBA are giving up more made threes per game than the Hornets, which is why it’s so likely that Kennard will see at least a couple go down tonight.

This is a good value on a very attainable scoring prop in a game that should be high-scoring compared to other Los Angeles games.

Pick: Luke Kennard Over 10.5 points (-110)
