The Minnesota Timberwolves hold the first pick in the NBA Draft’s second round, a byproduct of trading for Mike Conley and Nickeil Alexander-Walker a couple of years ago.

Yes, that trade not only landed Minnesota the two best contributors of all players involved — it is not like the Lakers got much out of D’Angelo Russell, Jared Vanderbilt, or Malik Beasley. The Timberwolves also got three second-round picks, including this one and Utah’s 2026 second-rounder.

Supposedly, the Raptors fielded offers of future first-round picks for the No. 31 selection a year ago.

There is a strong chance Minnesota trades this pick, but until that becomes reality, any second-round thoughts and NBA Draft odds need to begin with the Timberwolves.

Top Round 2 Picks for the 2025 NBA Draft

No. 31 Pick: Rasheer Fleming (+300 at FanDuel)

St. Joseph’s forward Rasheer Fleming and Marquette guard Kam Jones sit atop the odds board for the second round at +300 each to go No. 31 overall.

Betting on the Timberwolves to take Fleming stems from two thoughts.

First of all, they already have a young point guard for the future. Minnesota spent significant draft capital last year to acquire Rob Dillingham, and the rookie never had enough of a chance to either impress or discourage last season.

No decisions should be made now based on Dillingham’s rookie season.

Snagging Jones would neither raise this year’s ceiling nor the long-term ceiling. Taking chances away from Dillingham would be counterproductive.

If anything, the Timberwolves should seek a veteran point guard to share the position with Dillingham once Mike Conley retires, quite possibly after this season.

Fleming also fits the profile just proven by the Thunder and the Pacers. An athletic wing who can shoot — 39% on 4.5 attempts from deep per game last season — he could be a multi-positional piece on a deep roster in a few years.

No. 32 Pick: Maxime Raynaud (+290 at FanDuel)

Interestingly enough, though Fleming and Jones are both +300 to be the No. 31 pick, they are +600 and +750, respectively, to be the No. 32 pick.

Blame the Boston Celtics.

Do the Celtics need another wing? Nope, they still have Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum, even if the latter is going to be out for the 2025-26 season.

Does Boston need a point guard? Not as long as Derrick White and Peyton Pritchard remain on the roster.

The Celtics’ thought process right now must be how to best contend in 2026-27, once Tatum is back healthy. Having just traded a 7-foot-2 center that can shoot, they need to find a big man who can contribute within a year or two.

Enter Maxime Raynaud. The Stanford forward out of France stands 7-foot-1 and hit 34.7% of his 3-point attempts per game.

Sound like a certain Latvian?

ESPN learned that lesson, and it is one that needs to be learned only once.

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
