We start the week with a loaded NBA schedule, with 10 games on the board for bettors to dive into. Can the Philadelphia 76ers continue to make life hard for the poor-shooting Detroit Pistons? Can the Boston Celtics stay hot? And will the New Orleans Pelicans be able to break out of their current funk?
We break down the basketball odds for that and more with our best free NBA picks and predictions for Monday, January 25.
NBA Picks for Today
Philadelphia 76ers vs Detroit Pistons
A long season could get longer in Detroit tonight, as the Pistons host the Philadelphia 76ers. The Pistons have just three wins this season and have lost four in a row, while the Sixers finally look like they are achieving full “Process” mode, sitting 12-5 and winning five of their last six.
The Pistons' biggest problem is that they aren’t all that great at shooting, which is a bit of an issue considering this is basketball. Detroit ranks dead last in the NBA in shooting percentage, hitting on just 42.5 percent of their attempts.
At the same time, the 76ers' length on the defensive end will make things even tougher for the poor-shooting Pistons. Philly allows opponents to shoot just 44 percent from the field, which ranks second-best in the league.
These two just met on Saturday with Detroit putting up a decent fight in a 114-110 loss, but the Sixers made life hell for Pistons' leading scorer Jerami Grant, holding him to 11 points on 3-19 shooting. Grant should bounce back a bit, but not enough to eclipse his point total.
PREDICTION: Jerami Grant Under 22.5 Points (-120)
Boston Celtics vs Chicago Bulls
The Boston Celtics are coming off an offensive explosion where they put up 141 points in regulation against a solid defensive Cavaliers team. So, what can the Celtics do for an encore as they play in the second half of a back-to-back visiting the Chicago Bulls Monday night?
While the Celtics might have some tired legs after running all over the Cavs, they get another juicy matchup against a Bulls team that takes a more defensive-is-optional approach to basketball. Chicago ranks 27th in defensive rating, and 27th in opponent field goal percentage.
The Celtic most primed to take advantage of this matchup is Jaylen Brown. The Boston wing has taken his game to the next level this season, and is on fire right now, which means we are taking a hard look at his point total of 25.5.
Brown is averaging 31.5 points over the last four games while shooting 52.2 percent from the floor. That includes going off for 33 points on 13-20 shooting in just 19 minutes of action against Cleveland. Mix in the super high pace of play from the Bulls, and Brown should get plenty of opportunities to score in this matchup.
PREDICTION: Jaylen Brown Over 25.5 Points (-110)
San Antonio Spurs vs New Orleans Pelicans
Zion Williamson and the New Orleans Pelicans are in the midst of quite a slump, losing eight of their last nine games. They’ll look to break out of that funk when they host the San Antonio Spurs.
The Spurs are coming off a 121-101 win over the Washington Wizards and are the highest-volume shooting team in the NBA. Their 94.1 field goal attempts per game are tops in the NBA, and that could mean good things for the Pelicans’ player rebounding props.
The Pels are one of the best rebounding teams in the NBA, ranking third in rebounding percentage and sixth in total rebounds per game. While Williamson and Steven Adams are probably who you think of when considering Pelicans rebounds, it’s Josh Hart who provides the most value in this matchup.
Hart is third on the Pelicans in rebounds, averaging 7.7 per game, and has gone Over tonight’s total of 6.5 in 10 of his 15 games this season. It’s pretty simple. More Spurs shots should mean boards to grab. Take the Over.
PREDICTION: Josh Hart Over 6.5 Rebounds (-110)
