All indications are the Minnesota Timberwolves will indeed host the Cleveland Cavaliers tonight, but do not expect Target Center to be fully focused on the game. For that matter, Anthony Edwards & Co. may not be, either.

My Cavaliers vs. Timberwolves predictions and NBA picks recognize the game goes on, even amid much bigger concerns. But those concerns will certainly reach into the building at tip-off at 8:00 p.m. ET on Thursday, January 8.

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves prediction

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves best bet: Anthony Edwards Under 30.5 points (-115)

Officially listed as questionable tonight with a right foot injury, two thoughts lend credence to doubting Anthony Edwards’ points output.

First of all, that foot seemed to impact his finishing on Tuesday, shooting just 8-of-18 from the field and 3-of-10 from 2-point range. A healthy Edwards would never fare that badly inside, even if he insists he is fouled on far more drives then he gets calls.

In the previous seven games, Edwards shot 69.9% from inside the arc.

Secondly, Edwards’s minutes were discreetly impacted by the injury. Foul trouble covered up the fact that he subbed out earlier than usual and then went into the back area of Target Center for extended breaks, presumably to work on the foot.

If his usual pattern of playing the entire first and third quarters, and then also playing 6-8 minutes in each of the second and fourth, is lessened at all, that obviously creates value in doubting Edwards to score more than 30 points.

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves same-game parlay

Don’t tell anyone, but Rudy Gobert is playing some of the best basketball of his career right now, clearing this prop in 10 of his last 13 games.

Topping it in two games against the Heat in the last week, given Bam Adebayo’s presence, stands out in particular.

Related, the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the spread in both those games.

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves SGP

  • Anthony Edwards Over 30.5 points
  • Rudy Gobert Over 11.5 rebounds
  • Timberwolves moneyline

Our "from downtown" SGP: DiVincenzo from deep

Donte DiVincenzo successfully shot his way out of a slump on Tuesday.

In the three previous games, he had gone 4-of-23 from deep, and then he started with a few misses at home, only to finish the game 4-of-9 thanks to hitting multiple threes in a row.

The Timberwolves need that shot-making, especially as Edwards distributes the ball a bit more.

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves SGP

  • Rudy Gobert Over 11.5 rebounds
  • Timberwolves -2.5
  • Donte DiVincenzo Over 3.5 3-pointers

Cavaliers vs Timberwolves odds

Douglas Farmer spends his days thinking about college football and his nights thinking about the NBA. His betting habits and coverage follow that same pattern. He covered Notre Dame football for various outlets from 2008 to 2024, most notably spending eight seasons as NBC Sports’ beat writer on the Irish. That was also when his gambling focus took off. Knowing there were veteran beat writers with three decades more experience than he had, Douglas found his niche by best recognizing Notre Dame’s standing in each year’s national landscape, a complex tapestry most easily understood and remembered via betting odds.

In 2021, that interest created a freelance opportunity with Covers, a role that eventually led to Douglas joining the company full-time in 2023. In the fall, Douglas will place five or six dozen bets each week, a disproportionate amount via BetRivers because the operator tends to have lines slightly different than the rest of the market. The same can be said of Circa Sports’ futures markets.

While Douglas is an avid NBA fan and covers the league throughout the year, the vast majority of his bets are on college football, because that is the biggest key to sports betting: Know what you do not know.
