All-Star Race field

There are 20 drivers who will be automatically locked into the All-Star Race field, including previous champions and race winners from the 2024 season. Another three spots will be determined by the All-Star Open results (held shortly before the All-Star Race itself) and fan voting.

Kyle Larson has won this race three times, the most of any active driver, so it's no surprise to see him atop the board at +500. Last year's winner, Joey Logano, is sitting as a co-fifth choice at +800.

All-Star Race expert picks and predictions

Odds listed below courtesy of DraftKings Sportsbook as of 5-17.

All-Star Race pre-qualifying favorites

Kyle Larson (+500)
Kyle Larson led 145 of 200 laps and was victorious in the main event for his third All-Star victory on three different tracks in 2023. Last year, he finished fourth.

On short tracks this season, Larson led over 400 laps in his Bristol win, was fifth at Martinsville and third in Phoenix.

Ryan Blaney (+600)
Won the 2022 All-Star race at Texas and was sixth and fifth, respectively, the last two years.

Blaney was 11th in Martinsville and fifth at Bristol this year.

All-Star Race sleepers

Chase Elliott (+900)
Won an All-Star race in Bristol, was fifth here in 2023, and eighth last year. Chase Elliott finished 10th at Phoenix, fourth in Martinsville, and 15th at Bristol.

Ross Chastain (+2000)
Ross Chastain finished seventh here last year and 11th, sixth, and seventh at Phoenix, Martinsville, and Bristol this year.

All-Star Race fades

Christopher Bell (+600)
Christopher Bell has finished 12th and 17th in this race but has won Phoenix, was second in Martinsville, and eighth in Bristol. Not sure which wins out here, but not taking this price to find out.

Joey Logano (+800)
Joey Logano was 10th in this race in 2023 but dominated in last year’s win. However, he finished 13th in Phoenix, eighth in Martinsville, and 24th at Bristol this year. Just twice has someone won back-to-back All-Star races (Davey Allison 1991-1992 and Jimmie Johnson 2012-2013).

Tyler Reddick (+1400)
Third here in 2023 but 14th last year and 20th at Phoenix, 14th at Martinsville, and 18th at Bristol this year, too.

All-Star Race prop pick: Denny Hamlin -130 vs. William Byron

Denny Hamlin has been great on short tracks this season. He finished second here last year, was second at Phoenix and Bristol this year, and won at Martinsville.

Meanwhile, Byron was sixth at both Phoenix and Bristol and 22nd in Martinsville. He also only finished 20th and 19th, respectively, in this race.

Pick: Hamlin to beat Byron (-130 at DraftKings)

North Wilkesboro Speedway track analysis

NASCAR’s premier series has raced at North Wilkesboro 95 times. However, the 2023 All-Star race was the first visit to the North Carolina short track in 25 years. The last race prior to that was held in 1996.

Then, the track repaved the place, which completely alters the way they can race. Previously, Richmond was the best place to compare it to. Now, with a repaved surface and different tire strategies with a softer tire that wears quicker against one that doesn’t, a strategy element unlike anywhere else we go to comes into play.

Drivers will also have to deal with a competition caution at Lap 30, a race break at Lap 100, and a possible "Promoter's Caution" prior to Lap 220 of 250 on the .625-mile oval.

•    Three of the last five series champions ended up winning the All-Star race the year they won the title.
•    Chase Elliott won the 2020 All-Star race at Bristol and later won his first championship.
•    A year later, Kyle Larson did the same thing, this time the race was held at Texas.
•    Last year, Logano won the All-Star Race and Championship.
•    Translation? Don’t overthink it. The top drivers typically win the All-Star race.
