Today’s MLB Prop Picks: Michael Brantley Leads Astros' Offensive Charge

Highlighting today's lineup of MLB player prop picks is Houston's Michael Brantley, who we're backing to stay red hot against Glenn Otto and the Rangers — going Over 1.5 total bases in the process.

It’s a bit of a lighter day on the diamond with just eight games on the MLB schedule. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t plenty of baseball betting value to be found in the player prop market.

Today, we look at a pair of total bases props for a couple of lefties riding solid hitting streaks, and can Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen continue his great start to the season and shut down the Cubs for a second consecutive start?

Check out our NBA player prop picks for Thursday, May 19, as we bank on some of baseball’s best to do their thing.

Rafael's en-Devers

It’s probably not a coincidence that the Boston Red Sox have started to play better while Rafael Devers is tearing the cover off the ball. Devers will look to lead the BoSox to their sixth win in their last nine games when they welcome the Seattle Mariners for the opener of a four-game set.

The Red Sox third baseman has been one of the better hitters in baseball during much of the month of May. He's currently in the midst of a 12-game hitting streak where he owns a .458 batting average to go along with a 1.354 OPS. That includes him whacking 12 extra-base hits.

He’ll look to keep swinging a hot stick when he faces off against Mariners’ starter George Kirby. The M’s prospect is making just his third career start but has found success so far, allowing just one earned run on seven hits while striking out eight over his first 10 innings pitched.

If there is one blemish on his record to this point, the right-hander is allowing an expected batting average of .276 to opponents thus far. With Devers hitting .322 with a .978 OPS against right-handers this season, he looks like a solid bet to go Over his total bases prop again tonight. Something he has done eight times in his last 10 games.

Pick: Rafael Devers Over 1.5 total bases (-115)

Gallen keeps Cubs quiet

It sure has looked like Arizona Diamondbacks starter Zac Gallen has bounced back from a mediocre 2021, and now he’ll look for a second consecutive dominant outing against the Chicago Cubs.

The right-hander locates his fastball well and mixes his speeds well with a solid change and curveball while also using a cutter to strike out batters. Gallen used those all well as he had his way with the Cubs lineup five days ago, limiting them to one run on two hits while striking out nine over six innings.

The performance dropped his expected ERA to an awesome 1.89 and is limiting opponents to an xBA of .175. There's no reason to think he can’t put on another strong showing.

The Cubs' bats are struggling a bit after a decent start and rank 20th in MLB in batting average and OPS when it comes to facing right-handed pitching, but right-handers are punching out Cubs hitters at an alarming rate. Chicago ranks dead last in the Bigs when it comes to strikeout rate when facing righties this season.

Bet on Gallen to continue mixing his pitches well and keep the Cubbies' bats silent once again, staying Under his hits allowed prop in the process. At 4.5, it’s a number he’s gone Under in four of his six starts.

Pick: Zac Gallen Under 4.5 hits allowed (+128)

Backing Brantley's bat

The Houston Astros bats are crackin’ right now. They've plated five or more runs in eight of their last 10 games and they’ll have a great chance to keep getting some knocks when they open a series with American League West rivals, the Texas Rangers.

Another year where run prevention continues to be an issue for the Rangers as they rank 23rd in MLB in runs allowed per game. That could continue tonight when they hand the ball to Glenn Otto.

The right-hander got off to an OK start this season but got beat up in his last start against the Red Sox, and now he has an xERA of 7.70 and is giving up a .319 xBA to opponents. That does not bode well going against a Houston lineup that is a problem, featuring the likes of Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Yordan Alvarez, Kyle Tucker, and Michael Brantley.

It’s Brantley who we're homing in on for this one. The lefty's hit streak is up to eight games, where he's hitting .323 with a .981 OPS, including five extra-base hits. Brantley is also hitting .315 when facing right-handers this season and recorded a hit against Otto back in an April 27 meeting.

With a solid matchup against Otto and the fact he has gone Over 1.5 total bases five times during the eight-game hitting streak, at even money, Brantley looks like solid value to go Over that number once again.

Pick: Michael Brantley Over 1.5 total bases (+100)
