Today’s MLB props and picks

Charlie Morton Over 6.5 Strikeouts (-120)

As the summer months have been heating up, so has Atlanta Braves starter Charlie Morton — and the right-hander will look to stay hot when they open a series in Philadelphia against the Phillies.

Morton’s Braves tenure got off to a bit of a rocky start but that looks long in the past now. Morton has allowed three earned runs or fewer in 10 of his last 12 starts and is really feeling it at the moment. The righty is pitching to a 2.31 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .164 batting average over his last six starts.

Morton has also seen his strikeout numbers jump back up over that stretch, punching out 47 batters in 39 innings. And those numbers should continue against the strikeout-happy Phillies, who rank 24th in the MLB in getting rung up 9.24 times per game.

With Morton going Over this number in his last six starts and recording 13 strikeouts in 11 2-3 innings of work against the Phillies this season, he is a good bet to do so again.

Cubs-Cardinals Under 4.5 Five-Inning Total (-120)

After a low-scoring matchup last night, we’re going back to the well with one of the most storied rivalries in baseball as the St. Louis Cardinals host the Chicago Cubs.

With both the Cubs and Cards seven games behind the Brewers for first in the National League Central, little more than pride is on the line in this series. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t some betting value to be found as Adbert Alzolay toes the rubber against Kwang-Hyun Kim.

Alzolay has been a bright spot for the Cubs rotation and has bounced back after a bit of a rough June. The 26-year-old rookie has a solid fastball and a devastating slider that keeps hitters off-balance. As a result, opponents are hitting just .220 off him this season. That doesn’t bode well for a Cards team that ranks 23rd in batting average and 25th in OPS when it comes to facing right-handers. Alzolay also limited St. Louis to two runs on five hits over seven innings back on May 22.

Meanwhile, Kim is dealing right now. The former KBO star has allowed just one earned run on 14 hits in 24 innings of work over his last four starts. That includes shutting out the Cubbies on five hits in six innings back on July 10. Pitching should be the story early.

Chris Flexen Over 17.5 Outs Recorded (-135)

Want more KBO content? Coming right up. Seattle Mariners starter (and former Doosan Bear) Chris Flexen is in one hell of a groove and he’ll look to keep rolling when the Oakland A’s come to town.

Flexen is pitching to a 1.77 ERA, a 0.94 WHIP, and is limiting opponents to a .211 batting average over his last seven starts. Plus, he’s been dominant at T-Mobile Park all season long, owning a 1.76 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP in 10 starts at home.

The righty has also been as reliable of an innings eater they come. He has averaged over 6.5 innings per start over his last nine starts and has pitched at least six innings in eight of those games.

Considering he is facing an A’s team that ranks 22nd in batting average against right-handers, we like Flexen to flex his muscles once again and go deep into this ball game.
