The San Diego Padres will visit the NL West rival San Francisco Giants for the first matchup of a three-game series on Monday night.

The Padres took two of three from the Kansas City Royals over the weekend to pull back to a .500 record since the All-Star break. The Giants continued their second-half slump by getting swept by the Minnesota Twins at Target Field last weekend.

Padres vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Mike Clevinger (4-5, 3.59 ERA): Clevinger posted his second quality start from five tries in August when he held his former team — the Cleveland Guardians — to two runs on two hits (both homers) over six innings on Aug. 23. He’ll look to get his unruly August strikeout/walk ratio of 17-10 under control tonight.

Carlos Rodon (12-6, 2.81 ERA): After stumbling out of the All-Star break, Rodon has come roaring back to the forefront of the NL Cy Young battle, authoring a 1.44 ERA over his last five starts. He’s struck out 41 batters while walking only two in that stretch. Rodon pitched a complete game in his last start against the Padres on July 9, allowing only one run.

Padres vs Giants picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

Carlos Rodon should prove too much for the struggling Padres to handle on Monday night.

The Giants ace is off to an incredible start in August, pitching to a 1.85 ERA and a 0.82 WHIP with 31 strikeouts over 24 2-3 innings.

Rodon owns some enviable splits against San Diego this season, as he’s produced a 1.80 ERA over 15 innings of work with a .154 opponent batting average. That includes his nine innings of one-run ball against the Friars on July 9.

The Padres managed to plate 24 runs over their weekend series with the Royals, but this offense was in a major funk before taking on that second-division squad. San Diego scored only nine runs over their previous six contests.

Juan Soto has been just about as good as advertised since being acquired at the trade deadline, authoring a .931 OPS, but it’s been quite a different story for Josh Bell and Brandon Drury. The former has a .607 OPS with the Friars and the latter has been even worse, posting a .576 OPS.

Rodon has been incredibly tough on lefties in 2022, as he’s allowed only two homers to them over 100 at-bats and left-handed batters are hitting only .200 against him.

The Padres are 2-5 in their last seven road games against left-handed starters, and they’re likely to add another loss to that ledger on Monday night.

Over/Under analysis

The San Diego offense has been subpar of late, but the Giants' bats have been just as bad. Bettors should not expect this one to turn into a slugfest.

San Francisco has been held to just six total runs over its last four contests and has plated more than three runs in only two of its last 10 affairs. This lineup could have its hands full facing an unfamiliar opponent in Clevinger.

The oft-injured Clevinger had been handled with kid gloves by the Padres for most of this year and has yet to face the Giants. Yet the Florida native has authored a quality start in four of his last seven chances.

Both bullpens have been in the upper echelon of the MLB over the last two weeks. The Giants rank third by ERA in that span (2.41), while the Friars are sixth (2.68).

Camilo Doval has stood out for San Francisco, tallying five saves while producing a 1.69 ERA. For the Padres, it’s been Nick Martinez doing a lot of heavy lifting of late with Josh Hader floundering to the tune of a 23.14 ERA — another disappointing trade deadline acquisition. Martinez has tallied 10 scoreless appearances in August, getting the save in each of his last two outings.

Trend bettors should note that the Under is 10-4 in the Padres’ last 14 overall, and 7-2-1 in the Giants’ last 10 games against right-handed starters.

Prediction: Under 7.5 (-120 at DraftKings)

Best bet

The Giants have had a second half to forget so far, but Rodon has given Bay Area fans a glimmer of hope in each of his appearances. Bettors should side with his squad on Monday night.

Rodon’s home record stands out, as he’s gone 6-1 with a 1.86 ERA. The Giants have played well at Oracle Park in recent days, going 5-2 in their last seven games there.

Clevinger will probably blink first in this starting pitching showdown based on his 4.00 ERA on the month. With both bullpens unlikely to allow much, getting to him will be critical for San Francisco.

Joey Bart has been one of the few Giants hitters seeing the ball well in recent games, owning a .903 OPS this month. Look for him to jump-start this offense en route to a win.
