The New York Mets played the Atlanta Braves in a three-game set just over a week ago.

We saw a ton of fireworks in that series, with the two sides combining to score 42 runs over three games — an average of 14 per.

My Mets vs. Braves predictions expect more of the same in the series opener tonight, with slugger Pete Alonso playing a prominent role for the road team.

Let’s dive deeper into my MLB picks for Friday, August 22.

Mets vs Braves prediction

Mets vs Braves best bet: Pete Alonso Over 1.5 total bases (+120)

Pete Alonso doesn’t hit for the same kind of average against left-handed pitching, but he still generates a ton of power. The New York Mets superstar sports a .238 ISO vs. lefties, which is not far off from what he’s managed against righties.

Drawing a left-handed starter would normally be a little bit of a knock for Alonso, but that’s not the case in this instance.

Atlanta Braves starter Joey Wentz owns a 4.72 ERA on the season and has bounced around a ton, pitching for three different teams. He is not an arm that will neutralize someone like Alonso.

Wentz leans heavily on pitches that Alonso has not only handled but excelled against when facing lefties. The Braves southpaw throws a ton of fastballs and cutters, utilizing one of the two on nearly 80% of his pitches.

That should be music to the ears of Alonso, who has posted ISOs above .400 against both pitches vs. left-handed arms this season.

Alonso also boasts a .268 career ISO against the arms featured in Atlanta’s bullpen. He will remain a big power threat when Wentz leaves the game.

Mets vs Braves same-game parlay (SGP)

Ronald Acuna Jr. has been a monster against right-handed pitching. He has posted a .307 average, .265 ISO, and more than 35% of his hits have gone for extra bases.

The productivity should continue to be there against the inexperienced Nolan McLean, who relies on a pair of pitches (sinker, sweeper) that Acuna has feasted on.

McLean has only pitched five major league innings, while Wentz has played for four different teams over the last two seasons. Both offenses are poised to generate a chunk of runs in a high-scoring affair.
