The Los Angeles Dodgers edged the Milwaukee Brewers in a pitching duel in Game 1 of the NLCS last night.
Freddie Freeman was the only player to leave the ballpark, but if you're betting on someone to hit a dinger tonight, consider backing a pair of struggling stars to break out of postseason slumps with your MLB picks.
Here are my best MLB player props and home run picks for our Game 2 Dodgers vs. Brewers predictions on Tuesday, October 14.
Dodgers home run pick
Shohei Ohtani (+245 at Caesars)
Los Angeles Dodgers slugger Shohei Ohtani smashed 55 home runs to become one of just six players in baseball history to hit more than 50 in back-to-back seasons.
Ohtani homered twice against the Reds in Game 1 of the wild card, but has struggled since, going just 2-for-24 with no extra-base hits.
That said, the three-time MVP is simply too good not to break out, and tonight looks like a good spot for him. The Milwaukee Brewers are sending right-hander Freddy Peralta to the mound, and Ohtani is 3-for-9 with a pair of dingers against him.
The left-handed Ohtani slugged .661 with an incredible 10.3% home run rate against righties during the regular season. Peralta does a great job of generating strikeouts, but he allows good contact, sitting in the bottom 35th percentile in barrel rate and the bottom 25th in ground ball rate.
The biggest concern about backing Ohtani is that teams have been reluctant to pitch against him, and he was walked three times last night. That said, being intentionally walked yesterday and by the Phillies in the NLDS came back to haunt both teams, since Mookie Betts was then walked with the bases loaded to score a crucial run.
With Betts hitting the ball extremely well and Ohtani struggling in the postseason, expect the Brewers to have less fear about pitching to the DH tonight. That could lead to him seeing a good pitch that he can knock out of the park, especially with a 10 mph breeze blowing towards the right field fence.
Brewers home run pick
William Contreras (+575 at Caesars)
Brewers catcher William Contreras has gone just 1-for-11 at the dish in his last three games. However, the lone hit during that span was a home run to center field against the Cubs, which was his second of the postseason.
The two-time Silver Slugger has good reverse platoon splits and slugged .422 against righties — like Dodgers SP Yoshinobu Yamamoto — during the regular season, compared to just .338 against lefties. He also hit significantly better at home, where he slugged .431.
Contreras is in the top 20th percentile in hard-hit rate. He also caught on fire toward the end of the regular season, slugging .510 with 10 home runs in his final 50 games.
