The series opener between the Chicago Cubs and Atlanta Braves was uneventful and low-scoring. The two sides combined for just five runs and 12 hits, only four of which went for extra bases.
My Cubs vs. Braves predictions expect the offensive struggles to continue in Game 2, at least in the early going. Let’s break down why with my MLB picks on Tuesday, September 9.
Cubs vs Braves prediction
Cubs vs Braves best bet: First 5 innings Under 4.5 (-125)
Only three runs were scored through five innings on Monday, and there’s plenty of reason to believe we could see another slow burn offensively.
Chicago Cubs starter Cade Horton has performed at an elite level for months, allowing two runs or fewer in nine consecutive starts. He conceded just four earned along the way, with two coming in a game at the extremely hitter-friendly Coors Field.
Horton held the Atlanta Braves hitless in five innings of work just last week. While that’s unlikely to be replicated, he should find success once again.
The Braves have some big names in their lineup, but the production doesn’t reflect that. They rank dead last in batting average and wOBA against right-handed pitching in September.
Chicago may struggle to produce as well. Spencer Strider has not looked himself since returning from injury, but he should be able to hold his own against the Cubs.
They have not performed well at the plate this month, hitting .217 with an underwhelming .137 ISO. They’re not getting on base or generating much power.
Look for these pitchers to limit the offenses early.
Cubs vs Braves same-game parlay (SGP)
Horton has struck out at least four batters in five of his last six starts. The only time he fell short was against the powerhouse Milwaukee Brewers in a game in which he didn’t complete three innings. Horton just had six Ks against this same Braves team that owns a 26.6 K% vs. righties this month.
Michael Busch hits for a ton of power vs. righties and excels against the fastball, hitting .274 with 11 homers vs. that pitch. Strider uses the fastball more than 50% of the time, setting up Busch favorably for success at the dish.
