Athletics vs Giants betting preview

Starting pitchers

Paul Blackburn (2-0, 1.80 ERA): Blackburn has made three starts this season, with Oakland getting the win in all of them. In his last start on April 21, he went five innings, allowing just three hits and one earned run to the Orioles. The 28-year-old right-hander has been with the A's since 2017 and has a career ERA of 5.35 in 153 innings pitched.

Sam Long (0-0, 0.00 ERA): Long has made two starts for the Giants this season. The long-reliever has only seen 5 2-3 innings on the bump in 2022 but hasn't allowed an earned run. Last year, Long pitched 40 2-3 innings with San Francisco, compiling an ERA of 5.53.

Athletics vs Giants picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

You'd think San Francisco was due for a slump after an incredible 107-win season under manager Gabe Kapler. That definitely hasn't been the case thus far as the Giants have stormed out of the gate with an impressive 13-5 record, despite the departure of Kris Bryant and retirement of Buster Posey in the offseason.

Even more admirable is the fact that the Giants have been winning with plenty of impact players injured to start the year. Third baseman Evan Longoria has yet to see the field and outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. is currently on the IL with a knee ailment.

Tonight, the Giants will have long-reliever Sam Long on the mound with starters Alex Cobb and Anthony DeSclafani both injured. Long should only go about two innings before Kapler hands the ball to the rest of the bullpen.

Meanwhile, the Athletics have a bit of an unknown name themselves in Paul Blackburn. He's only faced the Giants once in his career, which came all the way back in 2017. The only current Giants on that lineup then were Brandon Crawford and Brandon Belt, both of whom got hits off of him.

Blackburn will face a Giants team this time around that is averaging 5.1 runs so far, second-most in the league. Outfielder Joc Pederson has gotten off to a great start with his new team, slashing .347/.377/755 with six home runs and 11 RBIs.

Despite all of this, the Athletics may be an underrated play here. Oakland is 6-1 in their last seven games following a loss, and their lineup still ranks middle of the pack in runs per game despite big names like Matt Olson and Starling Marte departing in the offseason.

Seeing the line jump this much in San Francisco's favor has me leaning the other way. I certainly won't be taking the Giants at -170 when they're relying on the bullpen to take them all the way home.

I'll be taking Oakland tonight but this is more of a value play than anything.

Prediction: Athletics moneyline (+150 at bet365)

Over/Under analysis

Oakland starter Paul Blackburn has gotten off to a good start to 2022, however, the Over is 4-0 in Blackburn's last four starts overall.

Although I'm betting on the A's tonight, I have no doubts that the Giants will get their fair share of runs. With that said, I also see the A's getting runners home against Long and the rest of the Giants bullpen. Oakland has fared better at the plate against southpaws than they do righties so far in 2022, and if Long doesn't have his curveball going, he could be in trouble.

Despite an 8-2 win on Tuesday, San Francisco used four relievers in that game with ace Carlos Rodon on the mound. Former Royals starter Jakob Junis could see action in this one when Long is taken out, and Junis had an ERA over 5.00 from 2019-to 2021.

The Over is also 6-2 in the last eight meetings between these two teams in San Francisco.

Prediction: Over 7.0 (-115 at bet365)

Best bet

Sheldon Neuse has been a nice story for the A's so far. DFA'd by the Dodgers in 2021, Neuse is now hitting second in the A's lineup every day and is hitting .327/.397.404 through 16 games (58 at-bats).

Neuse has gotten on base successfully in four of his seven AB's and is a threat on the basepaths as well. Neuse stole two bags successfully yesterday and should be in a prime position to get home at some point in this game.

Bet on Neuse to score a run for Oakland tonight in a matchup featuring weak San Francisco pitching.

Pick: Neuse Over 0.5 runs (+150 at bet365)
