Angels vs Yankees betting preview

Starting pitchers

Noah Syndergaard (4-2, 3.08 ERA): In his first season with the Angels, the towering right-hander has been solid, pitching to a 1.08 WHIP with a .231 OBA across seven starts. In his last start a week ago, "Thor" allowed just one run and scattered four hits across eight innings vs. the Rangers. The former All-Star doesn't have the overpowering velocity that he used to throw with before undergoing Tommy John surgery in 2020, but still averages about 94 mph on his sinker and four-seamer.

Jordan Montgomery (0-1, 3.30 ERA): The southpaw has been a very reliable piece in the Yankees rotation this season pitching to a 1.06 WHIP with a .236 OBA across nine starts. He's coming off an outing against Baltimore where he limited the Orioles to four hits and two runs through six innings. In 2021, Montgomery played his first full season since recovering from Tommy John surgery, going 6-7 with a 3.83 ERA and 1.28 WHIP across 30 starts.

Angels vs Yankees picks and predictions

Our side and total predictions are based upon our analysis of the line and total in this game. Our best bet is our favorite pick across all markets.

Moneyline analysis

The Yankees are tied with the Dodgers for the best record in the majors and are second on the World Series futures board at +600. That said, they come into this contest after losing back-to-back games and are a middling 4-5 in their last nine. The Angels have been even less impressive lately, losing five in a row to drop to 27-22, trailing the Astros by four games in the AL West.

The Halos will give the ball to Noah Syndergaard, who has generally been very sharp this season with the exception of an ugly start against the Rangers two weeks ago. In his other six starts on the year, Syndergaard has pitched to a sizzling 2.17 ERA with a 0.94 WHIP.

The Yankees are countering with lefty Jordan Montgomery, who has a 3.30 ERA with a 3.63 xERA in nine starts. Montgomery has been very solid for New York this season, but he's still looking for his first win due to a lack of run support.

Don't expect that to change tonight with the way the Yankees have been hitting recently. Over the last 15 days, they are just 25th in the majors with an OPS of .665, and injuries to Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson don't help. Sure, Aaron Judge is still mashing, but Anthony Rizzo has gone ice cold after a strong start — and most of the other guys are having a tough time making contact.

On the year, the Angels are second in the majors with an OPS of .748 with that number bumping up to .764 over the last 15 days. Three-time AL MVP Mike Trout is leading the way with a 1.063 OPS, but the Halos are also getting big contributions from a plethora of players throughout their lineup.

With the Yanks struggling at the dish, we'll back the Angels to snap out of their skid with a victory.

Prediction: Angels moneyline (+115 at SportsInteraction)

Over/Under analysis

The expected ERA and other peripheral stats for both starters suggest a bit of regression is on the horizon, but both keep getting outs. The Yankees have also been limited to two runs or fewer in six of their last nine contests, averaging just 2.89 runs per game over that span.

The Under is 7-2 in Montgomery's nine starts on the year, and the Under has also gone a commanding 20-8-1 in the Yankees' last 29 games vs. a starter with a WHIP below 1.15.

With the Angels 4-1-1 to the Under in their previous six contests against a starter with a WHIP below 1.15, we're leaning towards the Under tonight.

Prediction: Under 9 (-115 at DraftKings)

Best bet

Syndergaard doesn't overpower batters like he once did, but he's been doing an excellent job of forcing ground balls, producing the third-highest ground ball percentage of his career (50.4%). He's also been consistent this season, allowing two runs or fewer in six of his eight starts.

Now he faces off against a struggling New York lineup that has plated a total of five runs in its last three games. We're taking the Under 2.5 on Thor's earned runs allowed at plus money.

Pick: Noah Syndergaard Under 2.5 earned runs (+100 at bet365)
