Colorado sports betting got a competitive fuel injection on Wednesday when Circa Sports went live with its mobile app in one of the newest states to enact legal, regulated wagering. The Las Vegas-based company of Derek Stevens, who owns The D, Golden Gate and the soon-to-open Circa Resort, officially took its first step outside the Nevada market.

Mike Van Ermen, strategic operations manager for Circa Sports, talked with Covers about today’s milestone moment.

What made Colorado sports betting attractive to Circa Sports?

Circa Sports is a relative newcomer to the sports betting scene, launching on June 1, 2019, at Stevens’ downtown Las Vegas properties and on a mobile app. But with sports betting expanding rapidly in the United States, Circa quickly realized it wanted to be in that mix beyond Nevada.

“We’re very excited to launch outside of Nevada,” Van Ermen said Wednesday morning, shortly before the Circa Sports’ Colorado mobile app went live. “In just over a year of operation, we’ve gotten tremendous customer response, and we’ve realized the demand for our product wasn’t just limited to one state. We feel we serve a different part of the sports betting market than most, and we think that demand for our product will grow along with us.”

What does Circa Sports bring to Colorado sports bettors?

Van Ermen said it’s all about how Circa Sports was planned from the get-go, to give public players competitive numbers and not shy away from taking sharp bets.

“Circa Sports brings a sportsbook experience that was designed for sports bettors, by sports bettors,” he said, pointing to Stevens – who loves to bet sports – and sportsbook director Matt Metcalf. “Derek and Matt have really put an emphasis on transparency, consistency and fairness to all players, and I believe that shows in our customer engagements, as well as our bookmaking philosophy. We want bettors of all skill levels to feel comfortable and respected at Circa Sports.”

What state is Circa Sports looking to next?

There’s no question Colorado is just the first expansion step for Circa, and while Van Ermen couldn’t offer specifics on the next step, he provided some insights on which states are most attractive.

“We are always interested in furthering our brand outside of Colorado and Nevada,” Van Ermen said. “Certain states make more sense than others. I will say that remote registration is a key element for us. We compete with others based on product. Removing physical location requirements from that equation makes us even more competitive.”
