🔍 What I'm looking for at the Baycurrent Classic

The Baycurrent Classic heads to Yokohama Country Club in Japan for a premium, no-cut invitational tournament.

This Par-71, 7,322-yard composite layout uses 16 holes from the West course and two from the East, presenting a traditional, treelined parkland test. It’s also a unique scorecard this week featuring 13 par-4s, including eight straight on the back nine, placing a massive premium on ball-striking and total driving (accuracy and distance).

While the fairways feature forgiving landing zones, there's tight framing from the jagged bunkers, native vegetation, and a dense tree line. The miss window is small, with tree trouble in play because of the limited rough on the fairway edges.

The Bill Coore-Ben Crenshaw redesign features massive, heavily contoured bentgrass greens with sub-air systems that keep them firm and fast. Additionally, shaved short-grass runoff areas place extra emphasis on greenside touch.

Key stats

  • True strokes gained approach, and true strokes gained tee-to-green
  • Total driving
  • Proximity from 150–200+ yards
  • Bogey avoidance, and true strokes gained around-the-green
  • Adjusted scoring average, and Par-4 scoring

🏆 Baycurrent Classic picks to win

Best bet to win: Wyndham Clark

With three wins and three more top-five finishes across his past 11 events, Wyndham Clark’s results match his sterling statistical profile. After all, he’s gained true strokes across the board to rank third in this field in tee-to-green play and first in putting during his heater.

  • Course fit: Will be playing Yokohama for the second time and is fourth in birdie average
  • Recent form: Scorcher includes ranking third in total true strokes gained in Presidents Cup
  • Key stat: Third in field in adjusted scoring average in 2026

Outright pick: Sungjae Im

Not only has Sungjae Im carded four straight top-20 results while gaining true strokes across the board, he just paced the Presidents Cup in the approach and tee-to-green metrics. Add Im leading this field in putting across his past four events, and there’s oodles to like.

  • Course fit: Set to improve on T20 in 2025 debut at Yokohama
  • Recent form: Tee-to-green play elevated alongside elite putting during heater
  • Key stat: Second in field with +2.14 true strokes gained total over past four events

💣 Baycurrent Classic long-shot picks

Best long-shot pick: Johnny Keefer

Johnny Keefer is heating up at the right time while posting consecutive top-10 finishes and gaining true strokes across the board, including +1.17 per round in tee-to-green play and +0.62 in putting.

  • Course fit: 36th in Par 4 birdie-or-better percentage in 2026
  • Recent form: Elite ball-striking during consecutive top 10s
  • Key stat: 12th in driving distance and 19th in total driving

Best long-shot pick: Alex Smalley

This will be the second trip to Yokohoma Country Club for Alex Smalley, and he carded a tidy T4 in his debut last fall. That kick-started a career-year for the 29-year-old American, too.

  • Course fit: Carded 19 birdies and two eagles in 2025 event
  • Recent form: Seven top 10s with true strokes gained across the board the past calendar year
  • Key stat: Second in field in true strokes gained approach through past six events

Best long-shot pick: Sang-hee Lee

Sang-hee Lee has registered seven top-five results, including a win, through his past nine events across the KPGA Korean Tour and the Japan Golf Tour. While he's a true long shot, it's impossible to argue with the run Lee is on right now.

  • Course fit: Familiar with unique Yokohama aesthetic
  • Recent form: Scorching run of seven Top fives through past nine events
  • Key stat: Second in scoring average on Japan Golf Tour
